Don’t Sony make a loss on the actual console themselves and make the money back through games, subscriptions etc?

Surely they are losing out if the consoles are being stored in a Scalper’s warehouse as opposed to being bought and used by customers.

Not to mention the amount of people I know who have decided to opt for a PC instead or Xbox because it was easier to get.

best thing to happen now is for high street shops to reopen so they can do click and collect only....

The only solution is for supply to match demand. Thanks to a certain world wide issue this is not likely until well into the summer at the earliest.

They can do that anyway, the problem is getting hold of the stock in the frist place.

I lost pretty much all interest after the last restock a couple of weeks back or whenever it was; I've been happy enough playing on the Xbox instead and I've got plenty on the PS4/PSVR to keep me occupied possibly until the PS6 is revealed......
Plus I've just spent a fraction of what a PS5 would have cost on an accelerator card for my old CD32, I reckon I'm actually more excited about playing stuff on that now laugh

It'll have to completely overwhelm the spend power of scalpers. Otherwise they'll buy whst they can and continue to restrict access outside buying from eBay / Facebook etc etc.

Sad times but they've been doing it for live events and trainers for ages.

I did laugh when a company of scalpers cried to Forbes and the press saying they didn't like the attention and bad press. They weren't the bad guys bland merely acting as a vital service to gamers.

If there was a solid, consistent supply line to retailers, scalpers would be trying to flog them on ebay for £600 but you'll be able to order from shops at £450, thus killing their market overnight, unless they literally bought hundreds of thousands of the things every week.

As it is I think Sony have a certain manufacturing capacity that they'll keep for mos tof the product ife, that capacity is not enough to deal with the initial demand. For them to increase capacity temporarily is (I'm guessing) is too expensive.

Worse still, they are clearly struggling to get raw materials to make them - silicon for chips etc ? not sure.

I think a lot of people are resigning themselves to wait now - after all until GT7, Horizon Zero Dawn and next-gen GTA5 come out (plus others) there isn't much to actually run on it.

Its probably the case that scalpers are still buying stock to protect their 'assets', and stop the general public from purchasing the £459 console at RRP, thus making their £750 console very much less appealing. If the only place to get a console is from a scalper for £750, then thats what (some) people will do.

Where will this end, and how is it stopped? Have the scalpers just got so much stock now they have to choice but to keep buying new stock as it is released? Or are people actually buying the consoles at inflated prices?

I would love to know the figures from Sony on how many PS5s have been sold, vs how many have powered up and connected to their online services, i.e. how many are actually being used!

Scalpers feel they are getting a bad rep and don't deserve this public image! You have to admire the neck on it!

It's probably the chip supply chain that is causing problems for car manufacture at the moment. China will recover after Chinese New Year and as Covid eases and the supply chains get back up to speed then it will all change. The PS5 is not the new Rolex.

I work in the electronics industry, and we use components that use Silicon arcitecture, similar to the PS5, We are struggling to manufacture Electronic systems due to shortages, We have put an order in for Silicon based components and we have an Estimated Delivery Date of November. We would usually see a 4 week lead time, but now we are seeing 42 weeks......

Wow. Might not get better this year then. Not even sure how business can cope with that sort of change. Good luck!

Managed to bag a PS5 digital on pre-order from Smyths on the 6th Feb. It arrived yesterday. Managed to order the Xbox series X on the 5th and it arrived on the 6th.
Was originally gonna go for the PS5 with Disc, but as I was having no luck getting them I went for the Xbox...and then a day later managed to get the PS5. Used the hotstock app (free version) to get notified. Notifications came through around 7:20am for the Xbox and around 8am for the PS5. Got them both from Smyths.

Surely Sony could cut out the scalpers by just increasing the RRP to the £750 mentioned earlier and claim the hundreds of pounds of extra profit for themselves until supply improves.

I expect that then the scalpers would continue to buy up stock but increase their sale price accordingly. Would be amusing if then Sony were able to flood the market again at the original RRP and leave the scalpers high and dry with a load of consoles they'd paid way over the odds for though laugh

The scalpers will buy them and then up their price further. Sony can do nothing really, it’s beyond their power to control the retailers and they can’t make enough to meet demand hence the huge profits and attraction to the scalpers.

The prices would just go up even more, and it would be brand suicide. They would get torn to shreds in the press.

I've pretty much lost interest in PS5 by this stage.

I was initially keen but didn't like the design and bulk of the box. But then I decided that I would get one if I saw one available as the actual backwards compatibility turned out to be excellent - actually enhancing many of the PS4 games - and stuff like Demon's Souls Remake showed the potential for the new hardware.

However, months of PS5 non-availability later and I've just picked up a Samsung G9 monitor for my PC. Next step will be to try to source a suitable GFX card (RTX3070 or better, GT6800 or better) to actually achieve the gaming potential it offers. Sourcing a new card will be frustrating and expensive enough to be getting on with, can't be bothered chasing a PS5.

Gaming wise, I'll be concentrating on PC and Oculus Quest from here on in - still have my PS4 Pro with a stack of unplayed games to get through though and I can play PC stuff on my TV courtesy of Gamestream/Steam Remote Play and GeForce now.

Maybe when Sony come out with a Slim version of the PS5 in a year or so's time I'll take the plunge then.
