Well, it was kind of low spec in terms of GPU power at the time it was announced a year ago, the saving grace being the 720/800p screen meaning you didn't need as much GPU grunt to push the pixels. However, now that it has been in the wild for a few months with lots of real world reviews, it seems to do pretty well for gaming.
You are basically paying for the form factor ... if you want a really portable PC gaming experience, this is pretty much the best you can get and it does a good job at playing PC games with few compromises (other than the battery life).
My 8 year son would like a laptop this Christmas, budget isn't going to get anything spectacular as far as I can tell (£300-400) and it's mainly going to be used for relatively easy going Steam games (nothing modern or intensive).
Would a Steam Deck be a viable alternative? Can you turn it into a basic PC for the ocassions when he may need to do that?

Probably, you can use it as a regular linux PC by connecting it up to a monitor, keyboard etc.Would a Steam Deck be a viable alternative? Can you turn it into a basic PC for the ocassions when he may need to do that?
Getting one for this Christmas might be a problem though, would have to pay the deposit for one right now and hope the production really does ramp up.

Sounds like loads of hassle.... I would buy a basic laptop which will probably do everything he wants apart from 'proper' gaming then maybe an older console ?Would a Steam Deck be a viable alternative? Can you turn it into a basic PC for the ocassions when he may need to do that?
Loads of great cheap games out there.

Generally it looks like you'll need a powered USB/HDMI hub or dock, keyboard, mouse and external screen. Staying within the Discover app store and not doing anything intensive looks ok, going outside that into coding, Arduino/Raspberry Pi, plugging stuff in to connect to and code gets more iffy.
Mine is July-September on the website, if they're ramping up production then it might be closer to July than September, but I'm waiting for the Steam email for now. I think I'm going to go ahead with mine, and not cancel.

I'm in Q3, ordered October last year just to get on the list. Haven't decided whether to accept when I reach the front of the queue yet.Getting one for this Christmas might be a problem though, would have to pay the deposit for one right now and hope the production really does ramp up.

I guess the alternative was supply shortages though.
My Steam deck got delivered today and it’s an impressive bit of kit.
I’m not a PC gamer but I’ve bought it because I find a handhold fits with my life way more than a console does and my Switch has been swiped by my son!
Because I’m new to Steam I don’t have any games in my library and so far there aren’t many Deck verified games so I’ve downloaded Portal which I haven’t played before (I know, I’m 10 plus years late to the party!).

Depends on the games you want to play I guess. As impressive as it is that it runs Forza Horizon 5 etc, most of the games I'll be playing are years old, which will also significantly extend the battery life by the sounds of it. The waiting list runs into next year, realistically, so I can't see them replacing it any time soon.My son is getting a gaming laptop for Christmas, I've been gradually buying Steam games and I'm very impressed with the Family settings on Steam. He will have a heavily curated list of games and no access to the Store, which is pretty cool!

Well I’m pleasantly surprised, I thought it wasn’t going to feel polished but the quality and the way the software operates is very very good.
The hardware is excellent, it feels extremely premium.
Only frustration is the price of F1 ‘20 and ‘21 is still £40 plus!
Have a look on CDKeys ..The hardware is excellent, it feels extremely premium.
