Yes this can be done, however, I don't think it is dynamic so you need to manually do it...Which is all well and good as long as you do it before you loose connection!

I should have read up about this flight mode and the setting of different home point before flying. I can't help myself with new toys though, luckily it was not an expensive lesson to learn!

I'm sure on my old skool P2V+ there is a Dynamic Home point option - I would be surprised if they removed this option from later versions.

Yeah my old P2v+ has it, and it does seem to have been removed from what I have read.

As far as I can tell it's only set manually now for some reason?!

How is the picture quality affected by the gimbal cover being in place?

I think you need to have a look at http://dronesafe.uk/drone-code/

That was a long way to stay in visual range.
Appreciate what you're saying there and it's the CAA approach to take opportunities to give advice on safe flying on social media and forums. I think it's a case of legislation not being granular enough and not keeping pace with technology, especially around the autonomous capabilities of some RPAS. For safety I think the key measures are height and keeping separation from human air traffic. The drone code now no longer mentions the 500m horizontal limit while keeping the 400ft height limit. I think this is sensible as drones are getting physically smaller and more capable. I understand new RPAS legislation will be based on aircraft weight. Nevertheless any RPAS pilot still has to accept the responsibility for their own flying...hence doing it at low height and maintaining appropriate separation from 'congested areas'.

No.

The drone code stil clearly says 'keep your drone within sight', and for smaller drones that may mean closer than the example 500 meters. The CAA are well aware of the pace of technology, and often have access to machines you've not seen yet - so you cannot claim to be flying in a way they've not accounted for.

When it comes to automation, you are not safer - you have less direct control of your machine, and if it is out of sight, a larger delay before you may be aware of something 'going wrong'. Even longer before you're able to regain control of the machine, assuming it is capable of responding.

Not only are drones getting physically smaller - they're also capable of flying a lot faster. That means they can do just as much damage, and from a few hundred feet can cause serious injury. The drone code is not about 'taking responsibility', it is about understanding and controlling the risks of flying. The law is quite clear on this and just because you think it's not granular enough, or soon to be updated does not mean it doesn't apply to you.

I know this is the DJI Phantom thread but are many other people flying the Mavic?

Anyone care to share camera settings etc? My photo's/video doesn't seem to come out anywhere near the standard I see posted on youtube etc.

I know a lot will be done in post processing, unfortunatley my Macbook has given up so can't really do anything at the minute.

However I would have though the footage straight from it should be decent to start with?

I've read quite a bit about ND filters and people saying they are essential for good footage...The PolarPro Cinema Series seem to be the ones to go for?

It's trial and error for me, it's not as easy to get good footage compared to my Inspire and using an iPhone is fiddly. There are plenty of YouTube videos of how to set it up. Just keep at it, any advice I tried to give would probably be wrong anyway. biggrin Happy Flying.

Yeah I think I am going to get a tablet instead of using my phone. I've managed to get some decent-ish footage but nothing to shout about.

I'm sure once I can do some colour grading etc the footage will probably look a bit better.

Having great fun with it anyway, much better than my old Phantom!

Andy

If it's of any help, I set the camera to under-expose by .7 of a stop, as skies are always over-exposing, I also never look anywhere near the sun as the camera IQ is pretty rubbish and will under-expose the land and at the same time over-expose the sky. I also tilt my camera down a lot of the time.

I'm pretty sure the Mavic has the same camera as my P3 pro.

I've posted this in another thread, so apologies if you've seen it:

(make sure you view in 1080p)

Very little post processing... bit of saturation and contrast added.

I've seen the video before, but have just watched it again, really impressive...I think having decent scenery and places to video definitely helps!

Thanks for the shooting tips will keep all of it in mind

Hi - long time lurker etc etc.

Had a P2V+ (Which I bought from a friend when I was drunk smile (he was upgrading to an Inspire ...)) flew it like I stole it .... had a few prangs with trees etc - but nothing that couldn't be fixed. Eventually sold after buying a P4 and realised 2 Phantoms was 1 too many.

Now flying the P4 and loving it - but need to make more time for it.

Had opportunity over Easter to take the P4 with us to the coast - and got some lovely photos of our friends/their dogs and the lovely scenery.

In no way am I a photographer (ISO/stop/exposure don't really mean much to me ... yet)

One which I'm particularly proud of

Hi Guys, I dont know if you have seen but DJI have updated the Mavic to include "Fixed Wing" mode, it makes the UAV fly similar to a plane.

Anyway if your interested i made a little video of how to use it smile

That's a nifty feature. I've hated DJI since being messed around with the Wookong M when it was new and terrible support with the first iOSD modules but the mavic really is a great all round package. Keep thinking of getting one to just bring out in a backpack on jobs where the big ones are too much of a pain to get out

A bit long winded - but this is how the P4 saved me claiming on my Household insurance for a leak in the roof.

Short version is - we had roofers in (whom I trust to do a good job) So had scaffold up @ back of house. Co-incidentally I had Sky booked in to upgrade to Q - so even better they could use the scaffold to get to the roof/chimney stack.

Roofers finished in the morning - Sky Q came also in the morning, but said he'd come back in the afternoon with a mate as even with scaffold he'd need 2 bodies due to height.

They came back quite late/did what they had to and installed the 2 Q boxes - all good.

Next day scaffold was taken down. Week later we had quite a bit of rain, and next day we had a water stain in our bedroom/right next to the chimney stack .....

Put the P4 up, and guess what - 1 tile moved so sky engineer could get a good foot hold/not put back so a gaping hole in the roof,

Pinged sky - whom said they would send a chap round - I said I had photos/video which I forwarded to them - they admitted liability and paid up for repair/redecoration (one it had dried out) no quibble.

Roofer jumped up his ladder, literally ran up roof and re-seated the tile.

Sky - fair play to the aid out quickly and sent a bunch of flowers to the Mrs for the hassle.
