Random Photos : Part 4
Discussion
I was actually quite pleased with this one. Usually I take photos and then put them on the computer and think "Oh... I thought it'd be better than that" Still I'm sure it'd be better if it had been edited by one of the PH photography gurus who actually know what they're doing. Rather than a fkwit like me, who doesn't

Looks pretty good to me Nik, especially viewed at full size on Flickr. It's one of those shots that really does benefit from being seen "large".flagging boat by Nick Liassides, on Flickr
I like the composition. I can't be sure but it looks to be quite close to a Fibonacci spiral composition, something that we are expected to find pleasing to the eye.
It might be worth looking at very slightly playing with the right hand side of the boat just to pick out the detail in the dark areas a little. If you go "large" that may not be so important as the detail is pretty much there anyway.
Typically a little experimentation with sharpening/clarity can be enlightening and pleasing but it's good as it is. Ditto playing with saturation just to see if there is a nice additional effect available from a tad more saturation or maybe less. De-saturation can be popular for styling to get a different version of an image.
When viewing larger - much larger - one might need to consider eliminating the wind farm on the horizon for a cleaner and simpler line.
None of the above observations are necessary edits, in my opinion. It looks good as it is.
Wow!
Post-producing is something I struggle with, tbh (and I'm sure it shows). I try to use the tools but end up with graphs and lines and level maps ...and acute technofear. Then go away to cry in a corner, come back and hit "auto-correct"
I can see what I want from a picture, but I'm too clumsy with the camera and too tech-retarded to get there

If I have remembered what I read correctly you share the picture seeing and creating ability but technical dislike with a number of well known highly regarded photographers who always left it to others to do most of the technical work or, in some cases going a long way back into the film era, found a camera they liked, a film stock they liked and some settings (speed and aperture) that seemed to work for their subject matter (often portraits since monochrome portraits were usually or more interests to more people than were monochrome landscapes) and worked with those settings for thier entire careers.LongQ said:

Even today some of the bigger "names" reportedly largely rely on their team of people to make the development and processing side work while they get on dealing with the subjects and asking people to move lights around and stuff ....
Some basic Post Processing is not so hard once one discovers an application that seems logical to you (they are not all the same) and half a dozen tools that are the most likely to be useful. Anything else can wait until you feel a desire to dig a little deeper. Or not, in which case ignore them.
I took the opportunity to look through your recent Flickr stream. The results look good to me whether taken as a record of interesting things seen or as something intended to be more artistic, Plenty to build on there and a little basic post processing can help to make the compositional work even more satisfying if that is what you seek.
