My mother was involved in 'shopping' images back in the late 40s and early 50s.

PR images of film stars would be projected onto a ground-glass screen. My mother said it was very big, but no accurate dimensions were ever disclosed. What she would do was via (water based I think) paints she would remove blemishes. Some male film stars would require brow furrows to be left, but in the main they were just as keen to be despotted as the women.

The screen would then be rephotographed and the final print would be in 'soft focus' so that the modifications could not be seen.
