I was toying with the idea of buying a proper drone.
Flicking through this thread and you guys have made me realise I NEED one.
I live in the West Mids, so as such there are lots of abandoned industrial grounds dotted around which I'd love to photograph.

I have a little mini quad copter which cost me ~£50 and is mostly for indoors. It's not too easy to fly, so It's great practice keeping it in the air.

Is it worth staging my way up to a big boys drone? I'd love to get into photography eventually, but don't want to go buy a Phantom 3 for example, only for me to plant it into a lake. I'd rather learn to fly and use them properly first, although I can appreciate a proper drone will often do most of the hard work for you while you're first starting out.

Cheers!
It's REALLY difficult to crash a phantom 3. The great thing is, you just let go of all the controls and it stops and hovers - so you just need to get the 'Don't panic' thing embedded into your brain!

The only thing you must never do is both sticks down and in together - which turns the motors off. But in over 2 years of flying I've never even thought of doing that - there would be no reason.

If you're up for something cheaper, the Spark may be what you're after - equally easy to fly - but you'll need the remote controller as using the phone to pilot is rubbish.

Spark review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwfD6Ybb5SU

ETA - lots of second hand P3's out there.. some refurbished with guaranty... cheaper than Spark.

I like the look of a PH3. It seems ebay mostly has the standard for a good price, which I believe still has the camera, however doesn't have the ability to stream it back to a phone/tablet fixed to the controller? I'd imagine this would be quite a necessary feature if I'm looking to photograph with is, so it seems I'll be forced to shell out for the professional?

No. P3 standard is the same as pro, but doesn't have 4k vid.

You'll see live image on your phone/tablet, and take photos onto a micro SD card inserted into the drone.

I've went and bought a Phantom 3 to get started with. I've not flown it yet other than hovering at 1.2m in my garden, however I'll take it out somewhere tomorrow. I'm rather nervous about losing it somehow so I'm going to read through the manual 6 times hehe

Looking forward to getting out and using it.

Have a read of the drone code too.

Yep... Bealach. You can see why they close it in snow!

Which drone do you use for these pics?

DJI Phantom 3 pro. Same camera as in the Mavic Pro. Not as good as the camera/sensor as in the Phantom 4.

Dunno if the Phantom does tracking but if it does have you tried it? I'm keen on trying it up the Bealach.

I'm quite jealous. My permissions limit me to flying with landowners permission. That's quite difficult to get on an off the cuff basis.

Plus all of the stuff related to PfCO. It does take the fun out of it to a degree

Some great shots on here! I've recently upgraded from the Phantom 3 Advanced to the Phantom 4 Professional, and I'm very happy with it! Just waiting for my PFCO to land in my emails smile

Incredible shot, you can catch so many great shots with drones. I saw lots flying over the Golfoss Waterfalls in Iceland. Made me wish I took one with me.

I am just getting used to my cheapish drone. I bought a Yuneec Breeze 4k to have a play and decide whether its worth me spending more on a more sophisticated machine later.

These are a few still from Lake Annecy last week.

I *think* you can take photos in RAW on that craft. ?

If so, do so, then you'll be able to get much better post processing for your photos.

It probably shows, but I haven't done any processing of those pics.

I can use RAW mode, but I don't think that its a true RAW image thats produced.

There's raw and raw, that's true, but a bit of post on any 'raw' picture will elevate it hugely.

Digital Photo editing is totally new to me. Is there some decent free software I should start with?

Any hints and tips appreciated!
