im sure this will get moved but i wanted to give it a chance in here.
anyone else watch part one last night? 150,000 Euro prize money and some very high production values.
looks like an interesting concept and it was nice to see that 3 of the 12 finalists are from the UK (well, 2 now)
hoping that next weeks show gets a bit more technical.

Master of Photography - Series 1 episode 1 is being repeated again tonight (Friday 22nd July) at 6pm on Sky Arts (Sky channel 121).
Master of Photography - Series 1 episode 2 is being shown on Thursday 28th July at 8pm and again at 11pm on Sky Arts (Sky channel 121).

I can't say I watched it but I know Gina's other half (who is also an accomplished photographer and previous professional photographer of the year) I've seen the image she submitted and it's certainly not on par with her other photography but as she has said online with limited time and a small location area it's never going to get the best of her work.

Watched ep1 last night and quite enjoyed it. I was surprised that Gina was booted out first, I thought one or two of the others were poorer efforts but most were underwhelming considering these 12 people were chosen from thousands of entrants. That said, when they showed a clip from the portfolios earlier on it's easy to see why most were chosen so perhaps the occasion got to some of them. Thought the top three photo's were correct, although I quite liked the one from Hongwei.
Was a bit pretentious, but then a program like this is always going to be. The challenge was good, I enjoyed watching them at work (most of them!)

I watched it and enjoyed it but was some what confused by the Exif data on some of the shots. Some shots had a relatively high ISO 800 with a very high shutter speed 1/8000 surely you would keep the ISO at 100 and lower the shutter speed to get the same exposure but a better quality image?
episode 2 - why id that guy think it was ok to use his mates to stage all his shots? then conveniently mix up memory cards.
they judges dont hold back which is usually a good thing but surely, the images are not going to be to everyone's taste - they want the photographers to become clones of whoever is judging that particular episode.
still fascinating from a keen amateurs point of view but i think its getting a bit pretentious.

Probably too dark to shoot at ISO 100 and cameras these days can easily take good enough photos at ISO 800 and more.
I see your point if you have the best kit it's probably doesn't show that much but surely if your in a competition you want to stack all the odds in your favour? Just seemed a little lazy to me..Richjam said:

ISO800 really isn't that high, the Canon 5D mkIII goes up to 25,600 and I guess other cameras more. Those Leica cameras they were using probably cost a few £ more too. I don't think it was an issue. Also they're not producing shots for publication, it's just for the judges. I expect the judges want to see more creativity to see what they can get out of people at this stage.pidsy said:

Agreed, I found the 'pro' to come across as very arrogant, that his status gave his opinions weight. He complained a portrait said nothing about the person, yet the photo they exemplified of his was guilty of exactly that; it was blurry, grainy and non-descript too. He kept saying 'get closer' - as if he would only accept something that he would do, rather than opening his mind to other approaches. Ditto the judges, a little too closed of mind in my view, even if they claim to try and grasp other ideas. I did agree with their comments on the narratives between 3 images (or lack of in some cases).Also the episodes have been sorely lacking in technical detail - whilst I'm getting interesting ideas on composition, they are glossing over almost entirely the techniques; EXIF data is of limited use, especially when post-pro is used. Do the producers fear the viewers would switch off, or fail to understand?

What we've got is a big budget competition where the egos are huge (particularly from the judges) and very little technical info at all. The occasional flashes of settings used to gain a final image bear no resemblance to how I would expect the settings to be so I'm not sure if they are made up with a bit of artistic license.
The guy who won last week with the mirror shot and did well again this week with Michael madsen is my favourite - he isn't as OTT as the likes of the short haired German girl who tries to get in every shot she takes.
The guest judge this week was at least helpful and didn't just tell everyone their work was s
t.
