Going on a quick trip away for work to Austria for a few days & thought I would take the camera & enjoy the sites, however the flights I have are hand luggage only. I won't be able to take my full camera bag so was thinking of a quick wrap in bubble wrap & taking it with me but not sure how safe it would be & how iffy are airlines about batteries in hand luggage, any tips?

I always take my cameras in hand luggage and have never had a problem with batteries.

What about taking a spare battery? Although fully charged I think 1 will be enough

Wouldn't expect it to be an issue. Besides, plenty of stores sell batteries in the departure lounge. If in doubt check the specific airline T&C's.

Just remember to take the camera out of your bag/backpack and put on a separate tray when going through security scans. Forgot to do this with a camera and kindle recently and got a (mild) telling off from the grumpy Spanish security staff while they tried to figure out what was in the bag whistle

Always have a spare battery, and again, never had a problem. Having said that, most of my flights are within the U.K. I would suggest a call to the airline if you are concerned.

I'm off to Norway next month with no hold baggage, so the cameras HAVE to be in the hand luggage.

No problem with spare batteries ... I pack them sensibly in a small plastic box or pouch so they can't accidently short.

Something like this is perfect for small compact camera batteries:

I have some Sandisk ones which came with free SD Cards sometime back.

These (or similar) are just right for SLR batteries:

Last month I went to Morocco with a battery in my DSLR, plus two spares in the side pocket of the bag I took (not a camera bag, and packed with other stuff besides lenses and other gear).

I did have my reservations about taking such items, especially considering where I was travelling to / from, but no one batted an eyelid and I went through just fine. This was at Gatwick and Heathrow (missed a flight, had to rush to catch another!).

They were just a grumpy Spanish person! Flown all around the world hand carrying lots of camera gear, never once been asked either take them out to be scanned or to open my bag up after.

Thanks all for the response, no issue with it going through, only to put it on the belt.

I have the spare battery & SD cards in a small tuppaware container but no issues with that being left in the bag.

Quick trips away with hand luggage only are the best argument for investing in a Sony RX100, whatever SLR you own...
