sick of lugging all my dslr kit around I decided some years ago to buy a compact superzoom for holidays. I purchased a little lumix and have had a number of models since. The latest is the TZ60 which I've been very pleased with.

To compliment it I've decided to purchase one of the above. After much research I've decided the Panasonic will suit my needs the best as I probably shoot as much video as stills and the Panasonic will also replace my dedicated Sony camcorder.

Anyone have any real world experience of both cameras ?

I’ve had three bridge cameras in the last 10 years, with the last one being an FZ150, all but identical in essentials to the 200. I’ve still got it in theory buy my daughter has taken to it. I’ve also had a TZ compact for some years, probably four or so.

Likes

The zoom: Obviously the main reason many opt for it. Not lugging lenses around is a real bonus.

Quality of image: Not up to DSLR of course, but great for anything up to A3 size to be published in a magazine. Occasionally cropped as well.

Weight:

Easily missed by others: At weddings and such, most people don’t realise you are taking photographs.

Cost: Very cheap for the quality.

Simple: The controls fall to hand, are very similar to those on the TZ so I don’t have to think a lot (a significant advantage for me), and the sub routines don’t take ages to sort through. From case back to case again is really quite short.

Reliable: Carried everywhere and never went wrong.

Video: Simple to use, the zoom is quiet. No problems.

Dislikes

I’ve got big hands and the body is a bit narrow. I didn’t realise how much this irritated until I replaced it with a Pan G7 which fitted my hands perfectly.

Not flexible enough: I take photos for articles and books and have never been unable to get a picture, but sometimes it’s meant a bit of a fiddle. Thank all the gods for Affinity Photo.

Little value second hand: When I went to buy my G7 the dealer refused to take the FZ in p/ex because, he said, he could give me a discount for no trade in, but it was about the same as the max he was allowed to give me for the FZ. (Perhaps buy s/h?)

A bridge suited my needs at the time, and the FZ was a fabulous camera of its type. I stopped using it because I wanted 4k video. Had there been an FZ with that, I’d have bought it.

In comparison with the G7 in use, the limited routines show it up a bit. The quality is lower. I now have just two lenses, the longer one going up to 300mm. It’s equivalent to 450mm on an FZ.

Personal choice though.

Thanks for the reply Derek ! Did you mean the FZ2000 not the 150/200 ? The FZ2000 is a bit of a different beast and costs about £1k at the moment.

My apologies. I was talking about the cheaper, much cheaper, cameras.

I've got flu at the moment. It's turned my brain to mush. The only thing I've had to eat in 2018 has been four bowls of soup. I don't think I had soup in 2017. Not sleeping much and am very grumpy. Sorry to lead you on.

I have an RX10iii - can post up some sample shots if you like?

Pros - image quality is excellent, the lens really is sharp at all apertures and focal lengths (ie even at f4 and 600mm equiv)
Cons - menus are a bit fiddly (as per usual for Sony) and it's a chunky beast - don't get the idea it's 'compact' in any sense unless you are comparing to a DSLR with a 600mm equiv lens on it!

Happy to answer any specific questions smile

Keep us updated as I was looking at the fz1000. I have a Sony a65 and a few lenses but can’t be bothered carrying them around any more. Have a Rx100mk2 but fancy something with 4K video.

Will do. So far only had chance to charge the battery and focus on a few things ! Not even put a card in yet.

First impressions. Nicely made. Feels solid.

Bloody hell does it focus quickly ! Seems almost instantaneous. Makes my Pentax K5 feel like very old tech ...... Zoomed into a photo on the wall and noticed it was picking the eyes out as focus points. Clever...

Viewfinder is very bright and fantastic quality.

Will update ..

I got fed up lugging round DSLR as well, almost new Pentax K50..........I was on the point of getting a Sony RX100 m2 ( My son has an RX100m4 and wowed after seeing its output and spec) but anyway ended up with a Sony A6000............ about 3 trial shots so far with kit 18-50 lens....50mm 1.8F on its way to me...... The RX was a bit too small and fiddly........ put me off. the A6000 is more ergonomic ( to me) and reputably does a decent video as well, apart from sad lack of onboard mic..So may be another one to throw into the mix for those leaving DSLR and moving on.
PS Son also just got a Sony A7ii too..as his main cam.

You will have to stick some pics up ! My K5 ... Have half a dozen lens's with it but mainly use a Tamron 17-55 F2.8 and a Tamron 70-200 F2.8 which isn't the smallest lens !

I doubt i'll be selling it... For instance did my little 'uns school leaving party in poor light shooting almost totally with the 70-200. Doubt the FZ2000 could have coped with that.

Still when I don't need the quality of the DSLR I'm hoping it will be a good middle ground between the little Lumix and the K5 ...

Well after selling all my Sony gear and getting Alan Fz2000, which is fantastic. Sold my Sony RX100 mk2 and bought a Panasonic LX15 which turns up in a couple of days, looking forward to the 4K video and super sharp lens.

Nice one Scooby ! Can you give us a nice detailed review of the 2000 ? I've still not managed to take a picture yet with mine :-( Fitted the strap and lens cap and stuck a skylight on and that's it !!

Little Narcisus has been ill all week. Intended to get out today but weather is crap.

Take a look at this thread over on dpreviw
https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4124003
What I found so far is the in camera noise suppression smuggest the details out of the photos. I shoot jpeg and try and not do much post processing as I import straight to my iPad Pro. In the filter setting you can dial down the suppression and add some sharpness.

Weather has been cold and raining/snow here so just been adjusting settings and taking photos, importing them and checking. Love it so far, the photo and video side of things. So meny menu settings that are available it blows your mind. So getting the basics right that I’m happy with and checking out every thing else later on. Can’t wait for my LX15 to turn up now so I can apply the same sort of setting to that one and try it out.

Apologies for the thread revival but per the OP's original title I'm thinking of getting a FZ2000 or RX10 iii. How's the autofocus on your Sony with respect to moving targets? In particular I'm looking to try to take pictures of birds in flight.

Cheers.

No problem. Hmm - I must be honest shooting moving objects is something I rarely do... happy if I can get a decent shot of something static!

I think it's probably ok at tracking moving objects - not brilliant, not terrible. However the RX10iv is improved in this respect - see here so (if your pockets are deep enough!) it might be an idea. Main thing it's got going for it is a crackingly sharp 600mm equiv lens even at f4... check the feather detail on this little chap:

Thanks for that, think I'll give the rx iii a try actually. Not quite willing to take a punt on the mk iv out of the blue just yet!

I have a Sony RX10 MK III and a Panasonic FZ2000.

Panasonic is miles ahead in terms of AF. Not just its speed and accuracy but also choosing focus points etc.

Sony is a bit better for photos but I don't use either of those for photos - they were bought for video and in that FZ2000 is also better.
