2 main options.

Either get one custom designed for your camera - meaning you can still access the ports etc. without the l bracket blocking it. - these are usually much more expensive but useful especially if the bracket is in the way of the battery.

Option 2 - a generic one that may block some of the ports on the camera / battery.

I’ve just ordered some custom ones for my cameras as I was fed up having to remove the bracket every time I needed to charge the battery. As for blocking the ports - for my use - that’s not a problem.

I used a three legged thing orange bracket because I liked the orange! But by the looks of it - any l bracket on amazon for circa £10 will suffice.

The generic ones don’t have ergonomic sides so if it’s going to bother you - that’s another consideration.

I couldn’t believe the cost when I started looking - but I’ve got a rrs one for my canon arriving shortly biggrin

Really Right Stuff.

I have one for each of my bodies. One stays on all the time, this one is the one for my Df which only has occasional use, but comes in black or chrome to meet the desire of your body choice!

DISADVANTAGES:

Cost

ADVANTAGES:

Tailored to specific model for close fit but accessibility
Beautifully machined
Arca-Swiss tripod fit
Beautifully machined
Light, yet great fit

DISADVANTAGES:

Did I mention cost!!!

This is probably a very stupid question, not having used an L bracket before, but what, exactly is it used for?

Is it basically to allow you to mount the camera on a tripod both horizontally and vertically?

If so, does this not do the same thing that (for example) moving the ball head down to the side accomplishes, and without removing the camera from the tripod and re-attaching?

Also, does it not get in the way if switching between tripod and hand-holding?

Genuine questions, and I'm genuinely interested, as there is clearly a use for them, and a decent market looking at some of the prices.

It's so much easier and more balanced than putting a ball head on the side, that's usually really hard to get horizon right etc.

Absolutely not. Easy to fit/release and on my D800 the body is fine for my big hands and only encourages me to form a nice solid base with my left hand, i.e. I find it promotes a good technique!

Ok thanks Rob. I can see that keeping everything centred over the ball head would lead to better balance.

Right, so the L bit of the bracket goes on the left hand side of the camera (looking from the back). I can see how that would work.

Think I many have to look at getting one of these.

Many thanks for the clarifications.

It's the first thing I order for a new camera and I wouldn't shoot landscape without one.
