only issue with nikon is i can't find any deals around that includes body, kit lens + prime. (or body + 2 useful lenses)
Your other option is to go for DSLR + kit lens, (e.g. D3500 + kit lens for £350) then use the remaining £150 from your budget for another lens - maybe 35mm f1.8?

I'm pretty hell bent on getting him one of the canon deals from argos

DLSR canon 4000d
https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8366904

mirrorless canon m100
https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9181236

on paper the M100 has better specs in every way, plus its a smaller form factor.
On the otherhand the lenses coming with it seem a little wide. and i'm a little wary as he's basically restricted to having M-mount lenses.

the 4000d has the benefit of a 50mm 1.8, had the M100 had this it would've been a no brainer. also he could keep the lenses and get a better/different body when he wants.
downside is spec-wise it's not as good as the M100, it being £30 cheaper is negagible to me, i'm mainly swayed by the 50mm 1.8.

This might help in deciding between those two. https://cameradecision.com/compare/Canon-EOS-4000D...

Can I make a suggestion based upon this statement....

He used to own a DSLR however this was stolen. He's into taking pictures and knows more than the average joe
Rather than get him a physical camera (which I accept is a nice thing to hand over to someone), see if you can get a gift voucher from Wex or similar. If he has a modicum of interest and knowledge, I would suspect he would gain much pleasure and enjoyment in making his own selection of kit - and the dedicated voucher would prevent cash intended for the camera being spent on nappies.

The 250D is the newest Canon... annoyingly it's been out over 3 months not but I've not really seen any decent deals as yet...

Worth keeping an eye out though for when eBay do the 15-20% off deals and include shops like Argos and PC World etc.

Edit - this is a good price including the IS version of the kit lens

I would personally go for a mirrorless camera as it will be smaller and more likely to be carried around when travelling with a baby. Have a look at the Sony range but I would also highly recommend Fuji and Olympus (M4/3 sensor). The Olympus cameras are very intuitive and a joy to use, lenses are very affordable as there's physically less glass due to the smaller sensor size.

DSLR's will be a bit cheaper now than a good mirrorless, but I feel they aren't going to be as future proof. This may take away from the surprise but it may be worth having a chat and asking your brother if he would have a preference? It may end up being mixed emotions if you buy him a DSLR and he himself has been eyeing up mirrorless or vice versa. Same story with brands, as an example I currently shoot Sony, but have had Olympus and Nikon (and loved them), but don't get on with Canon or Panasonic at all.

well I gave him the DSLR, he appriciated the gesture. given him the option to return it if he does want the mirrorless. on paper yes the mirrorless is better, but the lenses are a little on the wide side. i figure the 50mm 1.8 would come in very useful for the DSLR.

thanks for the help though guys, i did apprciate it.

Awesome smile Nice gesture OP and I'm sure it's nice that the parents got a gift that wasn't just for the new baby.

tell him not to get a zoom lens, he won't be needing it.
