I have used Photoshop for years - but only use a fraction of its capabilities... cropping, sharpening, colour balance, clone stamping, text.... that's about it.

When Mojave came out it wouldn't save without crashing. I fixed this with a security setting (disc access). Now Catalina has come out I have the same issue - but it's not fixable.

Is there another photo editing software package that works well with Mac OS that I should be looking at? I'd quite like to delete everything to do with Adobe, fed up with it!

Thanks

I ditched Adobe and moved to Luminar. For basic use as you describe it really works a treat. What I have not figured out fully is blending layers, I think that seems more intuitive in Photoshop. General editing much faster, esp quick filter selection for adding curves, sharpening etc. Well worth a look a and I think you can get demo version to try to see if it works for you.

Luminar 4 just about to arrive mid-November and that should be fully up to date with Catalina - and I feel your pain there. I made the mistake of updating before checking all applications and found my Wacom tablet became a brick. Wacom took ages to update their drawing tablet drivers but fortunately all back working now. On the other hand my old film scanner is now defunct as the drivers look like they will not be being updated as it's such an old device frown

I am convinced the main purpose of each 'free' Mac OS upgrade is to make software you have already paid for obsolete. I own CS5 PS and now get the same save crash error on High Sierra. Thankfully Apple have deemed my Mac no longer eligible for further updates so they cant take away my Aperture.

In many ways I agree.

I'm running CS6 on both a Macbook Pro (Still running El Capitain), and a Mac Pro which gave me a few challenges when I upgraded to High Sierra to get CS6 working properly. I'm more than happy with CS6 - especially as it's the last photoshop before the subscription model came in, so am not likely to upgrade the Macs for the foreseeable future to ensure that CS6 still runs.

For once in my life I held back on updating my 2014 MacBook Pro. Everything I have works fine on Mojave, so I think I’ll stay where I am for the foreseeable.

Luck rather than judgement, by the way!

Affinity and Luminar both look very good.

I wonder which is best suited for my relatively simple needs? Or is that the same as asking 'what actually is a supercar?'!

From a professional user of Adobe products for many years, earlier this year I made the switch to Affinity (Photo / Designer / Publisher), both on Mac OSX as well as iPad (apart from Publisher). Can't rate them highly enough, worth keeping an eye on prices as although cheap enough already they very often go on sale. I'm fairly sure the iOS versions of Photo / Designer are half price at the moment, for £9.99 each as a one off payment an absolute bargain.

Had a similar issue (although pre-Catalina).

I think Photoshop has got more RAM hungry over the years. I run an iMac and MacBook pro and keep almost everything other than software on external drives so had thought there was plenty of head-room for the programmes to run properly. However, when I checked the memory usage bar showed this vast expanse of grey titled 'other'.

This is a catch all term and includes all manner of stuff, most of which is unlikely you need but takes up space. Clearing your safari cache and memory helps but it also includes system libraries, streaming files which if you stream videos can get quite weighty.

There's a few You Tube vids on how to bring this down but can take a while. In the end, I just time-machined everything and did a ground up start again thing.

Since then, everything has run tickity-boo - including an upgrade to Catalina which so far hasn't thrown up any issues.

Seconded for Affinity Photo. It’s a very accomplished PS replacement and is very cheap too. Well supported with training videos, if you’re used to PS then you should take to it no problem.
Very Stable on my Mac running Catalina.

Would be good if you could notify us (or whoever finds it discounted) as I'd like to get a hold of it too.

I'm using Darktable myself, which is free, and while it's kinda powerful it is lacking in terms of speed and ease of use.

Obviously I don’t know this for sure but I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a Black Friday sale as there has been talk of this on the user forums. Next thing is to work out when Black Friday is supposed to be of course.

Just a heads up for anybody still looking, Affinity stuff for Mac/PC is currently 30% off. Not sure about the iOS apps.

With Mojave, go to System preferences - Security & privacy - Privacy - + - PShop and then tick box to "Allow the apps below to control your computer. I had to do this to stop my CS5 constantly crashing, but I can't upgrade to Catalina without signing up to the latest cloud PS.

Just to update this thread for anyone thinking of going solely to Luminar - don't right now

The update to v 4.1 is still buggy - stability has improved but the browser function (Bridge in PS) does not work correctly yet. As an example I'm scanning in a whole load of old family slides and the folder is a recognised folder within Luminar but it hasn't updated the contents of the folder for a couple of weeks. On-line support is intermittent at best. Also exporting jpegs seems a bit off as some files I have exported as jpegs are now unreadable despite being fine when I first exported them.

Communication on a timeline for resolving these issues is not clear.

I can't recommend it as a full standalone editor right now.

I've taken the leap back into a trial of the PS cloud service and am running Luminar as a plug-in as really do like the editing features it offers, it just is not mature enough to be the full package at the moment.

Useful info thanks....

I have deleted all adobe stuff from my MacBook and am still pondering which photo editing software to get.

I gave up on any / everything Adobe about a year ago.

Currently using Photoscape X (the free version) for 90% of stuff; cropping, colour, etc. It doesn't have layers which suits me fine.

It also has very good clone / spot healing / brushes.

Very occasionally I'll use Sony's free imaging suite, but only because it handles the RAW out my Sony camera really well.

I still keep a copy of (free) Snapheal because I like its noise reduction, but it rarely gets used.

All running perfectly on a 2013 MBP, on Catalina Beta 10.15.3.

You might already know this so sorry if you do, but Capture One make a free Sony express version which has some features missing (layers, sessions, one or two tools) but the raw editing is fully functional and gives superb rendering on Sony files.

I did what they wanted of course and was so impressed I bought the company.....no sorry that’s somebody else, ....I bought the full Sony Version (very cheap it was too!) .
