Thanks to the help from PH I got over my ALSA/Debian issue by ditching Debian and installing Ubuntu as suggested. So thanks for that.

Now, in part two of the epic saga 'Linux for complete bloody numpties' is there anyway of specifying which application autoruns on insertion of a CD?

Currently if I stick a music CD in I get sound juicer popping up, I dont want that but another application.

I take it this is fairly easy if you know where to look, its just I dont, numpty you see.

Ta!

The one that comes with the standard version of Ubunutu

X Windows/GNOME is it?

(as if you needed more confirmation of my Linux skill level, its a cruel twist of fate, I'm now the user that I've despised all these years!)

Ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop environment by default (I think there's a spinoff called Kubuntu which uses KDE).

I'm at work ATM, but I'll check how to change the default application for a particular file type when I get home. I'm pretty sure it's not difficult.

My Gnome box is at home, but it's something like "Start -> Preferences -> System Preferences -> Removable Drives & media".

Right, i've just checked on my Ubuntu box. It's "System -> Preferences -> Removable Drives & Media", then click on the "Multimedia" tab.

Ahh good man.

Now, not being in front of my Linux machine.

Can I specify command switches through the control app manager?

I've been doing some reading and apparently autorun --/dev/cdrom will call a script when a cd is inserted which would be ideal as the application I want to run needs to run without any user interaction at all, mainly due to the fact that its not going to have a monitor.
