Have you retired now Mike?

Is there any other way (other than luck) to find the time to take on such a challenge?

wink

Your good eye for a shot a some forward planning will help the luck.

On a break in Dorset last September I saw 2 Kingfishers on a town centre river.

Great spot in theory although fabulous overhanging trees which attracted them also gave them plenty of darkened hiding places.

That and a dull, damp day, the problem that I only had a Canon G11 with me at the time and the main serious kit with the big lens being back home that week, left me feeling it would be a bit pointless to even think of going back with the more able set up I had with me (but not on me) but one that would still not be enough IMO.

At the time I was wondering where I might find a Long Lensed Sony locally ....

Went to place called Bellymack Farm in the Galloway Forest. Awesome place. They feed local red kites at 2pm everyday. There were literally 100plus red kites in the air at once all diving for the cut up scraps of dead animals the farm provided. I really wanted a good shot of a bird grabbing the meat but they are so fast I only managed flying shots. I'll only post one but there are more on my flicker page. A not to be missed if your anywhere around dumfries in Scotland. I will go back soon to try again! Can't embed a photo from my phone so Ive downloaded the photo and put a link from my flicker for the full res version.

You can watch the feeding kites at Gigrin Farm in Rhayader - some great photo opportunities. I called in between Christmas and New Year and got this one and many more...

The noise as they dive is unreal. As a field mouse you definitely wouldn't want to hear it!

For some reason corvids like rats are vilified by many. Anyway yesterday I went to Wishmoor in search of parrot crossbills but the army were on manoeuvres which tended to dampen avian activity. However I did manage to get a shot of this rather lovely jay

What a beautiful bird. A Lilac-breasted Roller perhaps?

Lovely goldcrest popped out in front of me whilst I was walking through boggy woodland at Chatley Heath.
