Humm….......scratchchin so how does it work with powder coated alloys which have had filler put in to repair curbing and other damage? Things don’t have to be ferrous to hold an electrostatic charge do they?

in my opinion, the parts will be electrical charged when they are spraying powder coat

Powder coating might just be a possibility, although I tend to agree more with Phillpot. First thing I would do is to take it to a powder coater and ask his advice!

My own thinking is that there are metallic fillers readily available; grind out the corrosion damage completely, fill with metallic filler and refinish. I think you will have to take all the chrome off as it is notoriously difficult to get anything to attach to chrome.

Is the pitting very deep? Would it be possible to grind the surface down enough to remove the pitting completely? Rechroming of clean MEZAC is possible. I totally agree with Phillpot though, renovating damaged MEZAC is a nightmare. It was a poor low cost option in the first place.

Hi
You will have to remove all the chrome before you can powder coat it, you can buy home chrome stripping kits to do this.

I’ve sent the question to the guy who did my springs as he seems know what he’s talking about. I’ll post up the answer when I get it. In the meantime, if anyone had a scrap cap and would like to send it to me I’ll have a play and see if what’s left of the old chrome can be removed without completely destroying the cap itself. You may just get metallic(ish) dust sent back in a samll envelope though laugh

ML Performance do have them in bare metal
Worth asking what he wants for a couple of them to play with?

got to be easier than dis-assembling, stripping off old chrome and repairing any pitting or corrosion?

I agree that it is virtually impossible to rechrome these as they are made from an alloy. If you really get stuck there are a whole load of different caps sold by Car Builder Solutions http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/
and there are several that might be used. You are looking for one suitable for a 57mm fuel filler pipe. I have been very happy with this company. Well worth having a look through their extensive catalogue for ideas and advice.
After one of these - anyone have one or know where? thanks

Any condition or a good one to replace your pitted/tarnished one?

New = Hens Teeth

if you have one I'd suggest you look at getting it re-plated

It is possible to repair and re-plate a pitted Mazak item, but its very labour intensive. They need to fill all the pits with metal (cant remember which one) before re-chroming. I was quoted nearly treble the price to re-chrome my Alpine filler cap, than simply buy a new one.

Help is out there though! I was watching Salvage Hunters Classic Cars and Paul Cowland needed to sort out a badly pitted rear number plate surround from a Volvo Amazon and he discovered a company that spray paints the chrome on and the result was superb.

Sorry I cant remember the name of the company, but I've emailed Paul and will update this post if/when I get a response.

There is a post on here covering the re-chroming of the fuel cap from a few years ago. It can be done. Try the search function.

A member here got a good result from replating by a company called Dorsetware ( https://www.dorsetware.com/contact-us/ ). When I enquired in late 2019, and showed them my very corroded cap, they quoted me just under £100 including VAT, return postage and a necessary environmental fee.

I contacted them again a few weeks ago, and received a reply today. They have been very understaffed during lockdown, but are now operating again. The quote remains the same, but the turnaround time is 12 weeks.

There are companies now that can spray a chrome effect, this was used by Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars season 3 episode 3 whey they were restoring a Volvo Amazon and the metal work wasn’t good enough to re-chrome, the finished product is amazing you wouldn’t know it wasn’t chrome !!

ACF Howell in Walsall did mine (real chrome).
And mine was pitted.
But get them to rebuild it, so that you know it all fits together, as the rechrome can lead to a tight binding fit of parts.

I'm pleased to report that the rumours of Mazak being impossible to restore are not correct. I've now had my original and replacement caps restored and re-plated by Dorsetware, and they made a fine job of both. The original cap on my S2 was by far the worse of the two, having been exposed to salty seaside air for the past 10+ years :

At Dorsetware's recommendation, they re-plated both caps with nickel rather than chrome, as apparently it sticks better to tricky cavities and edges. It also has a slightly less shiny finish, which in my view makes the restored cap a better match for a 30-40 year old car.

Since I already have the replacement restored cap on my car, this one will be going onto Ebay tonight, in case anyone is interested. Item number 204068364778 .
