Good to meet up today Tony - not sure I've seen a worse chassis before redface

Be good to see progress and any help I can offer is there for the taking - limited to passing things or when an extra pair of hands are needed

Magpies I'll soon know how much work there is and if I still need the pipe tool you have thanks for the offer your a star lol.

While the chassis is away i've started stripping the body down ready for a big sand. I have lots of questions about replacing parts updating etc starting with the steering bush is there not a bearing update out there or is the rubber bush still used.

Cheers

Hi Tony, glad to see you underway with your restoration, things always look the worst but when blasted might not be that bad, don't forget to prime it when blasted, need to keep the rust bugs away.

Now that makes a bit more sence looking at the pictures and why I thought a bearing was needed lol. Mine seems to have the housing and the bush in place but no bearing.
Seems the steering colum has been removed but not put back correct, I feel I must say this car did not come with a steering rack on it I bought that off my mate Alan Whitiker,

Alan I'm looking at using a tried and tested rust remover/ protector while I have it back for repairs then prime and paint when finished.

Does anyone know why the wiring loom came outside the car in the tunnel area and did not just run around rear of the dash,

Cheers

Well I know these cars were built in Blackpool but yours looks like it spent its life parked at the end of the Pier!

You've certainly got a challenge on your hands, best of luck smile

Top Tip: never buy a used car from someone who lives in a seaside town wink

the housing looks different but it looks like the bearing and triangular parts are the same

your housing fits from the engine side while others fit from inside the car. You sill need to dismantle and remove from the car to make sure.

Looks like only surface rust on the housing and will be easy to clean and repaint.

However, I would suggest to put the bearing housing back "inside" the car, this will be much better for the future corrosion protection.

Hi Tony,
That is the original early type of plastic bearing as fitted by the factory on the earlier S's. Mine was the same ( Escort I think? ). I replaced mine with the proper steel ball bearing race and ally housing kit from ML Performance. It does mean drilling new holes to suit the new housing. Also if you tap threads into the housing holes it makes fitting the assembly a lot easier, you can install the bolts into the tapped holes from the outside without the need to fit nuts on the inside. I also made up a rubber seal and seal retaining ring to keep the weather and road muck at bay.
I'll try to find my original topic with photos to show the method.

Good luck,
Glen smile

Its just surface rust really as said the car has been stood awhile so everything looks bad lol.

Too late to turn back know anyway I'll just keep plodding away at it and asking my many questions to help find the best and hopefully cheepest way of getting it on the road lol.

This is her today almost ready for sanding down etc.

Just the roof, door panesl and door handles left and I think its ready for a sand.

Could do with some under bonnet pics guys they seem to be rare on the s side of things.

Cheers

Seems a little strange that it is so rotten around the engine mounts, the one area that should get a good misting of engine oil to help protect it?

Hard to tell from photo's but is the rest reasonably solid or just not quite "gone through" yet?

Happy welding smile

Good luck with the welding.
It looks like the chassis no. has also been blasted away. They should have been more careful with that.
Hope it's still readable.

As we were saying earlier - replacing tube with just some rot is really not much worse when it's a larger hole! Mine went in the same places, but not quite as bad! (So not 'the worst chassis in the world,' as it turned out , lol. )
I found the blasting made thin areas look better than they really were - so check carefully. Lots of advice around though so steady away and you'll have brought another one back to life!
Tony.

Hi guys rest of chassis is really good and needs nothing more than paint. I think they rushed the blasting after ringing for me to collect only to get there to find out it wasn't done. Chassis number is still there but I agree a little more care would have been nice.

Im not worried about the repair although it does need more than I thought so a extra few mtrs of steel needed.

I'll try and post as repairs are done

Ok guys well it's been a while since my last post but work hasn't stopped I've been beavering away every chance I've had.
I'm going to try and put as many pics up as I can over the next few weeks your thoughts are welcome lol.

I've used rustoleam paint which is brilliant to use and gives great coverage. Also it has allowed me to paint it as and when I fix areas.
