The explorer engine conversion has already been done on an S so it is possible. It was well over 10 years ago now I was in email correspondence with a guy who had one in an S running an emerald ecu .. think it went to emerald for mapping in the end .. not sure what became of the car though, never heard about it since.
I have a recollection of this happening, and being documented on PH as well.Google might turn up something.
Conversion of choice seemed to be the 2.9 BOA Scorpio engine.

Just not sure why you would do it when a 4 litre Range Rover engine is readily available, as are the parts etc to fit it, and the knowledge, and it will make 240 bhp all day long - just get the entire kit from a Chimaera, including all peripherals, exhaust, induction, ECU etc. Yes, i am sure it will need some mods to make it fit, but this has already been done and called the V8S. Just saying.
if you had your mitts on a much more powerful engine, then i would understand, but the Explorer engine is nothing special as far as i remember it, and they were all automatics too as far as i remember.
100% on that, mind you I am no fan of the Rover V8 but still would be better than the Explorer V6if you had your mitts on a much more powerful engine, then i would understand, but the Explorer engine is nothing special as far as i remember it, and they were all automatics too as far as i remember.
Not too sure Rover V8 will fir into a S1/2/3 Chassis without plenty of cutting and welding.
If your gonna put a V6 in there, why not put a Cosworth 24V in plenty of people have done it before and TBH, will have much more power than a lazy US Engine.

the S4 used a Chimera Chassis.
I think you'll find the S4 was essentially a V6 engine into the V8S chassis. None of the S series used a Chimaera chassis, although some of the later V8Ss did use the 15" Chimaera Imola wheels.Long time no see Pete!

The Ford was supposed to be 201 bhp straight out of the factory.
Mine, if I still had it, would be 18 years old now, and it felt more like 101 bhp than 201.
My diesel Merc 4x4 had 163 bhp from the factory, and actually feels like it. But doesn't feel fast.
Just trying to save the OP from a lot of work and expense just to end up disappointed

With a mapped emerald ecu, BOB camshafts and a plenum swop you'll see 250 hp from a n/a BOA cosworth 24v.
This is the way forward IMO.I managed to wrangle 200bho from my S3 all those years ago, and it'd surprise 4 litre Chims... so a genuine 250bhp in an S would be fantastic fun.

On Friday i saw a 450 that made 272 bhp with no mods.
The 4.0 in my V8S went up to about 235 at the end, but it was a miserable gutless 235 that wouldn't pull unless it was screaming. The 4.6 was around 265 in its standard 'stump puller' spec - cam, heads and induction took it to about 285 with similar tractability.
I must admit that 10 psi perked it up nicely. My take from that is no matter how much power you get, you will soon get used to it and want more.

There was something chimaeraesque about the S4, must have been the bonnet styling, did some of them have Chimera style Vents or am I just making that up as well. ?
No, you've got that bit right a little row of slots along the "creases" either side, somewhat more subtle than the Chimaera, hardly show in this photo.....................
