I'm down for the "Full Monte" with a suggestion of an alternative out-bound route via ferry to Santander then via Spain. If you're going to break the bank you might as well do it properly!

Not sure Longers should be encouraging people to "chase the dragon" I've seen Trainspotting and it frightened the life out of me.

Just say no, kids!

Santander to Monaco via the Spanish Pyrenes, Andora and then into Frogland to Perpignan and up the Mediterranean coast to Monaco. 1320Kms in 2 days, or 3 days at GTS pace laugh. Then on to Spa via the Italian and Swiss Alps maybe? Bugger the cost, that’s the trip of a life time thumbup

Bought this for the last trip - worth every penny. Luckily the sticker was gratis.

Don't worry will be back in the right marque for the next one if not necessarily the right model !

Joe,

As we discussed at Spa we'd be up for the crossing to Santander.
Sorry we missed you at the last Bucks meet, we moved house that weekend.

In case anyone is wondering what this topic is about I sent a brief online survey to some of the S Club Eurotour regulars to gauge interest in options for the 2018 Eurotour because the duration and costs would potentially be a lot more than normal. Choices were:

  • There & back to the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique
  • To Monaco and then to the Spa Classic, which will hopefully be taking place the following weekend, going via the Alps and Black Forest / Vosges ("The Full Monte")
  • A shorter 2 night / 3 day trip through Wales ("Chasing the Dragon") which would hopefully cater for those unable to make Monaco, as well as anyone who wanted to do both.
As above posts have shown there is enough interest to make it worthwhile planning something for the S Clubbers interested in going to Monaco. My favourite comment in the survey was "Money dependant but would probably look to remortgage my house to be on 'the full monte'...smile".

However, I always want the S Club Eurotours to be inclusive rather than exclusive. Seeing as Wales was so popular with everyone and the timescales / costs make it more achievable for more people that will be the destination for the 2018 S Club Eurotour, which means as many people as possible can attend. Having said that it appears there will still a be a large group of S Clubbers heading to the Côte d'Azur, which will be Nice (boom boom!).

Joe, I know you don't like France and that was a good route you posted above but, as you pointed out, it's an expensive way of doing it which I think will put a lot of people off. Also 24hrs on a boat rather than a night in a comfy French hotel room that doesn't move around is another drawback for some people!

My personal view is that there is more than enough in the Pyrenees and Picos de Europa to make it worth staying there on a future tour and properly "doing" the area rather than using it as a way of getting to Monaco. If you, Darren and anyone else are dead set on going that way then I'm happy to look into options for you but to start with I'll be focussing my attention on the shorter channel crossing routes. As I said above I want this to be as inclusive for as many S Clubbers as possible wink

Cheers for now,
Longers

Sorry Barry! I was about to reply and say you didn't get the email because you weren't on last years Eurotuour... but then I realised you were eek In case it makes you feel any better you were not the only one I missed banghead All I wanted was to get a feel for what people wanted to do and I've got that. Don't worry, you'll still have the chance to attend if you want wink

PS I hope your leg is all sorted now?

For anyone half thinking about a Spanish option, there is a cheaper alternative. Portsmouth to Bilbao:-

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Monaco/Bilbao,+B...

This route is 1200Km compared to Calais Monaco which is about the same as Calais - Monaco (direct via Autoroute). There is a shorter Bilbao - Monaco route but there aren't so many twisty bits.

This is a longer crossing, departs Portsmouth Sunday evening and arrives Bilbao early on the Tuesday morning. In May this year the cost was £310 for one car and one passenger plus £85 for a two berth cabin for two nights (ie £42.50 each sharing). Obviously there would be food on top of this as well. Added costs would be hotels in Spain on Tuesday night and maybe Andorra on Wednesday night and possibly an extra night near Monaco depending on when the main contingent are arriving.

So, just putting it out there for discussion. It is a more expensive option (but possibly not ridiculously much more than the standard route) but would use up more holiday allowance for those poor sods who still have to work for a living rather than those of us who don't, but are just poor laugh

The ferry timetable for 2018 won't be available until end of July/early August so it's all academic until then.
