Hi all,

started working om my S1. While doing so I took of my swirling pot. Outside and inside it is rusted and the small pipe just under the cap broke off. Can I remove the rust inside or is it better to find a new one. On the web there are different versions buy they all seem to have more pipes than mine. Can anybody help?

BTW i'm from Belgium

Cheers

The standard answer on these swirl-pot questions is to contact Shaun and ask him to make you a nice stainless steel one. Why not go all the way and get a matching expansion tank as well?

Time I bit the bullet and replaced mine. Another S1. I have emailed Shaun, his work is certainly 'the business'.

Hi dee_lom,
In case you missed the link posted by v8s4me,
you can email Shaun via his profile page:

His stainless steel swirl pots are really the best you can get anywhere.

as an aside, would it matter if the swirl pot was removed from the cooling system? What does it actually do? Does the Ford Capri/Granada 2.8 have such a thing?

Somewhere to fill
somewhere to put pressure cap
Somewhere for air to vent out
somewhere to hold a "stock" of coolant.................... scratchchin

No they dont, but they both have a radiator with a head ABOVE the cylinder head. We dont, so we need a high point. Another feature of our system is that the system always has some air in it, that would normally be at the top of the rad and compressed as temperature rises. But in our case the high point isnt the rad and without the swirl pot the air would have to keep passing round but would accumulate at the highest point and trap the system whenever you stopped. The swirl pot has to both get the air out of the water and provide it with somewhere to accumulate without causing an air trap.
It is still possible to get an air trap in the heater system incidentally as the top pipe can be above the swirl pot water level. If you only run the heater very rarely it can air lock. I try to remember to have it on and flush it through for short periods regularly and I fitted an in line bleed valve as well above nthe heater water valve (Car Builder Solutions).
