What's that thing on the floor by the back wheel? Looks like it might be a black hole waiting to suck in any small parts or fasteners you drop.

Looks like an accident waiting to happen, ouch!!!

On the other hand, it could be a central drain for the garage as it rains/snows a lot in Sweden?

Good luck with the rebuild, Maffe, and looking forward to more post as you progress!!

Don't worry about the rear screen Maffe, you'll not need the roof up where we're going wink

@mk1fan: Lots of maintainens work, 27 year old car that have not been much done to during the 15 years I owned it. Only fluids and brakes have been done regularly.
So now it´s:
- Shocks/springs, 27 years old
- Drive shafts, just got them loose a few min ago and the splines (?) are bad so new needed.
- Poly-bushes going in, old rubber 27 years old :P
- Clutch
- Oil sump, have a big dent in it...
- Gaskets and stuff
- Water pump needs to be replaced
- Rocker covers, got "new" power coated
- Reline the wires to the "Maffe-button" that I installed 10 years ago on a parkinglot in Poland :P
- Quickshifter going in smile
- Back screen, even thou Longers think it´s not needed. May in north Sweden will be not that hot!
- Brakes need an overhaul as well, might put bigger discs in have a set of Chim-discs on the self. Any one have a tutorial for converting the rear drums to disc? smile

Have most likely forgot something, Going to do a bigger service on the engine when it´s out of the car.

@GreenV8S: Yes it´s a singularity where I put all garbage, most likely it opens up in some garage in England wink

@yknot: Yep, central drainage, or a black hole...

@magpies: Thx! I will, even thou I have used bad words about people in Blackpool :P

@Longers: Totalt agree! Just ignore bad weather biggrin

Whats an "outrigger" sounds like a boat thingy :P

More serious, the parts that I can see and feel with my fingers looks/feels ok. Guess the body need to be lifted to be certain?

Nice new suspension components well set up will make a huge difference.

Is the new spring softer than the original, or is that my imagination?

Are you planning on lifting the body ? Might be worth a partial or full lift.

I found the chassis on my S2 in a good condition after lifting the body. One of the outriggers, on the inside side (!) had a hole after seriously poking around there with a screwdriver. Attached photo shows the cut out area for repair, before welding the new piece in place.

Keep up the good work with your resto and good luck.

You should be able to get a reasonable idea by taking the rear part of the front arch liners out. They rot out along the top of the sill tube there and sometimes further back by the seat belt mounting point. Basically anywhere the body mounts trap water and mud.
Having a very close look around the trailing arm mounts would also be a good idea.

You can get a very good idea of where they rust from various people's body off photos and get to look at most of it without lifting the body.

With the space and facilities you have there a 3 or 4" (100mm) body lift wouldn't be a particularly big job. even if all is good it will give access to clean up and re-paint smile
