Having wrecked my air filter box lid with an Easy Start flaming backfire (unfortunately no video) the repair is functional but not pretty, & I can't seem to source a new one........so I was thinking of alternatives. I've seen pictures of custom Capris showing cone filters on the Bosch system air intake
Had anyone done that for a 2.8 cologne engined S1
Any pictures or sources of custom bits would be of interest cheers

You might view this as an opportunity to extend the intake duct forward so the air filter draws from the cold side of the rad? Preferably also block off around the rad when you do this - which is quite easy to do.

Not sure about this tbh.. if you have the mech injection with the air box then i believe you need the top for it to work.

On my old golf gti we put a K&N in and driled large holes to let more air in the front of the box..

Ive not seen a cone on this system and the panel filter will flow better anyway.

If you have EFI then yes a pair of cones can be fitted with ease.

Got any pictures?

Cheers

Yes it is the mechanical system but as V8 Green indicates it is a big box about 50 mm tight behind the fan on the hot side of the radiator, just where you want the air to flow
As a long term S1 owner I know anything to keep it cooler in hot weather is a plus.
(Hence I have installed a fuel cooler, and have wrapped the exhaust down pipes and the fuel lines right from the tank. I have also diverted the fuel lines as far away from the exhaust as possible)

I was thinking of a flat face of aluminium instead of the lid with the filter in and hose or hoses out to the side/s to K&N type cone/s in the cooler air around the wheel arches.
This could also give a bit more space for airflow out from the hot side of the rad.

Sorry im confused frown its been a long day.

Do you have one of these?

Ie the MFI metering head? 2.8 MfI

Or two of these? 2.9 EFI

Thanks

Presumably as it is a 2.8?

Where is the air filter in that concoction, under that big rubber cap thing that are prone to splitting?

The airbox is under that 'big rubber cap' AND the fuel metering head. It is very important that it is airtight between the filter and the air meter valve. You could probably make a box in alloy and seal it, I doubt if the shape would be crucial to the air flow. You could run the air intake to the front of the car (it is currently low down inside the chassis near the front near side wheel) but you cannot move the airbox because of the injector pipes from the fuel metering head.

The car shown,( Dave's) is VERY non standard but the standard air box is still there but with the air control valve cover (big rubber cap!) turned round about 100 degrees. You just cant see the airbox on this pic.

The ford 2.8 V6 also has green rings on the injectors...and to confuse things further it has seven of them!

Lols that airbox on eBay may be the way to do then you can modify your existing one (assuming the bottom is intact...

Not sure you gain much extending the inket i would just open the box sone.

You can get air temp meters on the bay cheep so you can monitor inlet tenp. I did this on my cosworth and when moving these were always around the abient temparature so not much to gain. Ubless you want a mild ram air effect..

Tread carefully here. The MFI system is very sensitive to vacuum (as it's entirely metered by airflow), and by having an unsealed or open box, you can negatively affect the way the fuelling is delivered.

Sorry Damian, the way the airflow relates to the injection is COMPLETELY different on the S1. Totally agree with Richard Kitchen, mess with airbox and you will mess with the metering which is incredibly sensitive already.

Dont be sorry smile

All i can say is that on my golf this worked just fine and released a couple of bhp so long as you only mod below the panel filter obviously.. smile

Google will find many examples of this mod.

Here's one http://www.auto-tat.co.uk/Escort%20Upgrades/Chapte...

Here is a video of a custom box bottom..

Best of luck however you go..

Darn it. The air box lid found on e bay was (I am told) from a capri which is a totally different shape, shallower and wider (I understand the S1 unit is Granada based) so I’m still looking.
In the mean time more gorilla glue!!

damn, sorry about that. I hope that info gets added to the NEW Alternative Parts List. You should be able to re-sell it OK to the Capri guys. I will keep my eye open.

What shall I add to the list ?

I assume the airbox from a 2.8 MFI engine is the correct one. Is this correct ?
