Cologne, the Essex was the S1 2.8, I believe.

2.8 and 2.9 are Cologne engines.
The old 3.0 is an Essex lump.

nono This is INCORRECT!

Both the 2.8 and 2.9 V6 fitted to the S Series cars are Colognes albeit with certain differences.

The earlier 3.0 Essex V6 was fitted to the 3000M etc.

Ok so this is all as I understood it, but attended a local car show today and some chap asked what the engine was in my S2 to which my reply was 2.9i V6 cologne, and to which his reply was "don't be silly it's quite clear from the manifold setup that this is an Essex!". He also quite pointedly told me that if it was a Cologne then it must have been retro fitted!

As a new comer to TVR I am always ready to stand corrected but was fairly convinced my info was correct. Thanks for the clarity.

Could be he was thinking of the 2.8 (cologne) which has Siamese exhaust ports so only 2 ports on each side. Whereas the 2.9 (cologne) has 3 each side as does the 3 litre Essex. This maybe confused the poor deluded fellow.
Or he could just be an opinionated armpit....

Lol......indeed Wotno, there is a fair chance he was deluded, but I can hand on heart say, there was also a large portion of armpit!!

Armpit was probably thinking your 2.9 S was an earlier 3000S which is visually similar but predated the Wedges.

Our S was shown at the 1986 London Motor Show as a retro styled car that took cues from the 3000S Convertible.
The new car was intended to be a low cost introduction into TVR ownership and received universal acclaim from the public and a considerable number of advance orders, and so was hurriedly put into production. A performance sportscar for the price of a family saloon or hatchback like a Sierra or Cavalier? scratchchin Tough call...

I'll bet the enquirer had a ruck sack on his back smile
Easy peazie to tell Cologne (2.8 or 2.9) from an Essex V.
Colognes have the distributor at the back of the engine,
Essex's have it at the front...

Oh to go back in time and have this knowledge!

No backpack, but a full family audience in tow to ensure I was well and truly told what’s what.

My only comment is "what a w*nker!"

It's BLOODY OBVIOUS which engine is which, the three don't even look remotely alike !!
(i.e. an Essex versus a Cologne 2.8 versus a Cologne 2.9).

Just check out some photos on the web .......

The only excusable mistake I can see is not being able to tell a 2.3V6 from a 2.8V6 (both carb), as they DO look very alike.

But then I guess there is a passing resemblance between a 'S' series and the earlier 3000S models...but as soon as you look at the engine....

As far as I know ....

The only TVRs with Essex engines were pre-wedge ones.

Wedges had 2.8 as Capri, I think a few very late ones had an Efi installation (as Granada).
S1 had the same 2.8, and S2 had the 2.9Efi.

But given time and special orders and TVR, I guess it's possible there are some oddballs around !

Or a 2.4 V6 from a 2.9 V6! The only external difference is the code on the engine block (and the code on the ECU).

Ask me how I know...…...

Oops, Yes, 2.4 to 2.9 also. Forgot about that.......

I can tell you (sort of) the reverse, which is that we put a 2.8 into a 2.3 Cortina, and even the MOT tester didn't spot it......
It did go well in straight lines.....
