I agree. The originals would surely have been flush mounted under a smoked plastic cover.

Are you re-trimming the whole dash and fitting things where you want them?
Is that silver coloured panel a switch panel?
Bearing in mind personal likes and dislikes and all that....I find the warning lights and gauges layout as bad as it gets...they really are horrible looking to me and the warning lights themselves are cheap and nasty looking, I have fitted many of those warning lights and always wished I could have started from scratch with decent looking ones

Cooling fan/fans warning light/lights and override switch/switches may be of interest to you, perhaps a push button start with hidden security switch and do away with the ignition switch????????????????????
Yes I'm re-trimming the whole dash and re-siting the switches and gauges and also adding extras
The silver (stainless) panel is a switch panel with push button start along with fan over-ride etc.

I'm probably going to try and build it at least an inch (25mm to our young viewers) further forward to give a little more room for the behind dash parts of the switches and gauges. May well have the gauges in a S3 type line.

I'm thinking of something along these lines with the indicator light between the speedo and rev counter

Looks a bit "kit car" with everything in a line.

One of the joys of the S1/S2 is the slightly odd curve of dials

And it's out.
Love the way the heater is not fixed to the car body.
Bit of a mess.

Heater is out. Will try to redesign the footwell outlet and include the eyeballs. Also look at including fresh air to the box. Anyone else done this?

absolute terrible design (not sure if I mean design) the flap moved by the slider only opens the convoluted way to the lower outlets and does not shut off the upper (screen) outlet which is directly above the heater matrix - no wonder there is almost no flow to the footwells. And no point in connecting the dash eyeballs.

I bet you can get better fans these days. I wouldn't bother trying to improve that old thing.

Problem is that there is not much room there

I would want the oil pressure and the charge warning lamps directly in front of me ie between the speedo & tacho.

I think that modern fan/motor assemblies may work out smaller as well as working better.

Surprised Richard has popped up yet with something from his beloved Car Builder Solutions. wink

I believe he used a second hand one from a FIAT Punto?

The 'heater' is the worst bit of cobbled together work I have seen. It clearly was not 'designed' and is so inefficient it is an embarrassment. I 'improved' mine using Fiat Uno parts but it was a job I would never be proud of. I spent some time in breakers trying to find a solution but nobody used a similar arrangement and I did not have time for a complete start again.
That was before Car Builder Solutions came up with their heater stuff.
I have promised myself to go and see some of the CBS stuff. Not quite sure why Mike took that line on CBS, I have had a fair bit of stuff from them, for several restorations, as have several friends of mine. They have proved excellent to deal with and have gone out of their way to help, even bringing stuff to shows to enable us to evaluate them. There are a number of items in their current catalogue which might be very useful, but it would need research. Fancy tackling it Mick?

Incidentally I did notice the brown stains by the heater motor. The nearside wiper spindle mounting is leaking! Bet it has come loose. Fix that and you might stop that leak. Unfortunate that it drips straight on to the heater motor, mine was rusted solid!

As far as dash goes I confess I am also a fan of the swooping dash on the earlier cars. But the first point for me was function. Why have lights that do nothing. Why have lights positioned where they shine in my eyes or on the screen. Why have warning lights positioned where I cant see them! Number one for me was to put the indicator tell tale between speedo and rev counter where it was actually on view!

You will know when the spot-lights are on hence you won't need a warning light to notify you, the same for fog-lights unless they are rear fogs

Can't recall but aren't warning lights MOT requirements? I know they are for rear fogs, assumed it was for front but could be wrong.

You assume it's night time, which isn't a sensible assumption, and you assume the lights are bright enough to be obvious, which they aren't.

At the moment my 'design' will not work due to the heater box being too close to the back of the dash.

So now looking at a different heater design and probably a different dash design too, closer in looks to the original swoop of gauges
