In all the shafts I've removed, I've only ever snapped two bolts. One was on my own car.

And my tools aren't posh, they're just cheap.

Make life easier for yourself, do NOT fit the star socket type bolt. Those are really intended for one off machine fitting when new and will strip socket if not an absolutely perfect fit. Fit 12.9 (MUST be 12.9, no less) high tensile hex socket head from a good name like Unbrako and get an impact bit to match. These need to be REALLY tight, as I know only too well! Threads on bolt and coupling need to be clean (not accidentally well lubricated in CV joint grease!) and a suitable threadlock compound used. Then, like Kitchski, I paint across the joint and check them.

Just little old me and my dodgy left shoulder and a normal 1/2" socket wrench I'm afraid.

I first used/broke x2 star bits ! (The broken bits came out).
Then bought another couple, unbranded but cost more !
Then applied my locking grips to the bolt head plus the star socket, and with 2 hands, each and every one 'cracked' and came out.

Just the shafts? Or the CV joints too? I've got a spare pair of driveshafts.
