Further update , decided against the powder coating idea and dash will be on its way to be reveneered . I think I maybe just had a downer on the wood finish because my one was very dark and very flaky and generally looked rubbish.
Anyway cheers for all the replies and sorry to have wasted everyone's time !

Just another thought. You might consider hydro dipping it. Take it back to metal, prime it and then they can apply any pattern you like. Various timber effects, carbon fibre, machine turned, etc. Then a clear lacquer is applied, so waterproof (as the top is rarely up!) and no more splitting veneer in the sunlight.
I still haven’t got round to doing it on mine yet - but I will - one day!
Tony.

Fair point about wasting time , you're right it's nice to see and hear everyone else's ideas .
Interesting re the dipping , haven't seen that before , had to Google it , looks good.

Has anyone seen a carbon fiber dash/trim? I can't decide whether it would suite the style of the interior.

Just to finish off this thread I started , here are some pictures of my finished and reveneered dash finally fitted .
Malc at London carriage craft did the work and all I can say is its stunningly good , honestly the pictures don't do the work justice , the finish is as smooth as glass.
I can thoroughly recommend him , no connection, just very satisfied.
Be aware , it's quite pricey ,BUT it's the old adage if you want quality you pay for it .

Whilst the dash was out I took the opportunity to fit wide angle LED filaments to all the gauges. White happy with these.

All in all happy , worth the anger , swearing and cut arms and hands !!

That looks fabulous to my eyes!
I think it's hard to beat the beauty of highly polished walnut, especially when the grain is as nice as that with the interior colours you have.
Do you happen to know if the veneer was glued straight onto the original metal sheet of the dash or did they use a very thin backing ply or something similar?

Thank you Stu ,
I did talk to Malcolm who did the job , regarding the different expansion of the metal and veneer and he said he hadn't had a return due to this issue , and he's done plenty !
To be honest , I personally don't know the answer to that question , sorry .

Lovely job! LCC did mine in 2011(?) and it still looks great. If you regularly left the dash exposed to strong direct sunlight it would eventually crack. So don't! thumbup

Well I'm kind of hoping to use the car a lot more otherwise I may end up getting shot of it from lack of usage. I've only done around a 1000 miles in the last four years !
That said, I do enjoy working on it and being left alone in peace , it's quite therapeutic in a wierd kind of way .
Time to get driving I think . Definitely with the top down .

No problem. I did wonder whether there was any risk of movement/cracking but probably on the S it's less likely than on a 'normal' car as there is a very much smaller glass area and the roof probably also reduces the heat soak.

Correct !! A fair few people said keep it original .....I think you and they were right .
Goes to show how useful it can be to get various different opinions , especially from the enthusiasts in this part of the forum.

Looks great cool Keeping the veneer with the grey leather was the best option wink
