Hi

I got the car back in bits March 2018 so it's an ongoing rebuild on a limited budget. I am hoping to fit the body in July but I am doing engine bits at the moment and I have the clutch etc to change, the parts that cost money and no one eees. Luckily I have an understanding wife who doesn't mind me disappearing into the mancave at night and brings me the odd beer. So if I put any bits in the wrong place you know why lol

I got mine in May last year, In a very similar situation as you with regards budget, come to a bit of a halt due to work commitments, but accruing parts in readiness for rebuild as soon as chassis welded and coated. Will be following your progress. Good luck.

There is a very good thread on the Chim page regarding coating of chassis - well worth a read.

A good price for a clutch kit and a good read on the chimaera. Some very well insulated engine bays that I will have to look into .when the out riggers were repaired we turned the chassis over and drilled and internally wax oiled all the main tubes and fitted the correct rubber stops if this helps only time will tell

Well done !

Don't forget the gear box mod. Grinding off the areas marked with blue felt pen, makes it easier to get the gearbox in and out.

I'm intrigued with talk of getting the gearbox out with the motor in. When I was stripping my S1 down I decided to see if this looked to be possible. The body was off so I could inspect everything. I undid the drive shaft from the diff but there was no way i could get the driveshaft to slide past the diff far enough to get the front of it out of the gearbox. My car is an early S1 (first registered October '87) so maybe they changed something in the chassis later.

If I remember correctly, you have to take out some diff bolts to allow the diff to be pushed back a little.

In order to remove the prop with everything else in situ I removed the front diff carrier mounting bolts. With these removed the front of the diff can be lowered, carefully, on a jack allowing the prop to slide back above (very tight) the diff and be removed from the gearbox.

HTH,
Carl.
