Fuel pipes

I was looking at a few topics on fuel pipes, my pipe from fuel pump and return to fuel tank is a small Solid plastic pipe. It does still have the Ford label on, but as yet I have not manage to get code from it.

I will replace with the stranger rubber double walled hose. Just wanted to know if other S’s had this?

Yes, you're not unique, but I think a lot are now replaced with rubber hose.

I’ve just replaced the hoses on mine - not because there was anything obviously wrong with them, but to deal with increased ethanol in fuel.

On Saturday morning I woke up to a strong solvent like smell in my house , went to the integral garage where my S lives and discovered that the fuel line from the tank to the pump had disintegrated and was predictably letting fuel out onto the floor .

I managed to get a container in place and caught what was left in the tank . The rubber or plastic pipe seems to have just disintegrated without warning or any damage caused by driving .

Worth checking all fuel lines now ,

My tank to pump fuel line was also in a sorry state but from standing for 12 years. I replaced all the rubber hose lengths with ethanol tolerant stuff. I believe that the original steel reinforced piping from the factory may have been hydraulic hose but I'm not sure.

To anyone who hasn't replaced their fuel lines for modern ethanol-resistant stuff, look at the photo here or google for others.

All the polishing and upgrading isn't worth a penny if your car goes up in flames.

Don't put it off - just do it.

Hi all , going to be replacing all my fuel hosing , found some Cohline R9 hose from a reputable company , my question is , does anyone know how much I need for my S3 ? It's quite pricey so I don't want to over order !

Lets just blame Ethanol for everything! That's 30 year old hose that has deteriorated from the outside, inside and everyside (imho)

Have a measure up, everyone is different! Are you also replacing the hoses that were originally hard plastic?

Hi Mike , yes going to do the lot , not sure I trust 1993 ford hard plastic . If I'm under the car struggling with one might as well do all of them . Might just measure the length of the car and double it ...!! Like you say a bit of spare doesn't hurt .

Gates Barricade hose is as good as you can get but generally only sold in 25 foot rolls, share one?

How much you need will of course depend if you intend going back to front and back again all in hose or keeping some copper between engine and pump/tank?

On mine:

The original plastic and rubber hose going from the filter to the fuel pressure regulator measures 2 metres exactly - say 7 feet..

The original return hose from the fuel pressure regulator to the tank is slightly longer, at 2.4 metres (about 8 feet).

Add on the short bit from the pump to the filter, which is around 9 inches.

Total length required = around 16 feet - i.e more than half of a 25 foot roll (so you won't get 2 cars out of one roll).

Mike, I don't know what you mean by "keeping some of it in copper" - as far as I am aware, some TVRs like the Chimaera and other have a section of copper pipe, but the S Series is all rubber or plastic?

Hi chaps , cheers for the info , I was going by roughly 5m myself , may chuck on another metre for good luck / spare .
John , the guys I'm getting it from only do by the metre and are not interested in doing a discount ,worse luck !

I replaced almost all with copper, only using Gate Barricade for about 100mm at each end.

You're more than likely correct, long time since I changed mine, thought there may have been some copper like as you say on Chimaera/Griffith.

I replaced fuel lines I took the banjo from outlet of filter to a hydraulic firm and they upgraded to the correct size for fuel line so no plastic after filter which means no joints and they replaced the plastic pipe from pump to filter it took about ten minutes and was about £4 per mg
