Hi all , last month of my furlough so thought I would get a bit of S work done .
Dash is back out for heater control and console switches LED fitment and also some wiring mods to make dash /console removal / refit easier.
Have decided to discard the original steering column , ignition yellow connector even though it shows no arcing or burning etc .
Does anyone have any ideas on a good connector to replace it , let me make it clear I DON'T want to solder the wires permanently or use a choc block , I want a proper connector .
I've been looking at the Delphi / Aptiv metri pack 630 series which are rated at 46A and they look pretty good but only seem to go up to 5.0mm2 xsection cable fit on the terminals and the ignition wiring is 5.0mm overall diameter.
Anyone got any good ideas ? Cheers all.

If you're measuring 5mm dia. it could be 4.00mm square?

"Temporarily" replaced mine with a nice big choc block several years ago wink

Hi Mike , it's been a nightmare trying to work out what I need , does anyone know what cable size is fitted to the ignition system at the plug and what plug and contacts will fit ?
I know you have a choc block and it works fine but I really want to fit a plug here.
Yes it works out around 4.5mm xsection I think .

Hi chaps , yes I'd seen the Anderson connectors but they're pretty big and cumbersome . I know they're 50A rated but they are maybe a bit excessive .
Been in touch with a supplier to see if he can do the Delphi ones with the larger terminals . I'll let you know if I have any joy .
Meanwhile if anyone has any other ideas solutions please let me know , much appreciated.

Following a 'yellow connector' incident, I'm removing all the high-current stuff (the fat red and the 2 whites) from my ignition switch. I'll connect them to a 100A relay, activated by the switch. I really don't want to have to replace the ignition switch.

I should be able to use a low-current multi-way connector (or even 5 6.3mm blade connectors) near the column. Or a 5A choc-block. Even more non-original, but should work better.

I have a mild philosophical objection to the live supply coming up the right-hand side of the car from the battery (fat brown) and across under the dash to the star point, then back across the dash to the ignition switch (fat red), then back across yet again to the fuses etc (fat whites). So I'm going to add lightness, and reduce volt-drop. So the relay (or contactor?) will be on the right.
Even then, the lighting wires have to come back to the main-sidelight switch. No wonder the headlights are dim!

I'm deleting the dim-dip module too, so perhaps I'll use the dim-dip relay as a main-dip control, replace the fat whites and take the high current off the dipswitch too. Might need a main flash relay. Just thinking aloud.

Shush, Penelope!

Hi chaps , thanks for the replies / ideas , after a lot of messing about , I've found a place that will do me the Delphi metri pack connectors , 46A rated, with the 4.5mm2 terminals , (everywhere else only supplied 3mm2 terminals ). He ordered the terminals for me as a special order with his supplier. All in £22 delivered which I'm happy with .
Once I get them I'll post a couple of pictures , of prior and post fitment.

Saw these this morning: look like they should be man enough.

The description is wonderful:

Specifications:

Material: Polycarbonate (PC) shell, stainless steel shrapnel, copper

I carried out the mod as menttall described.

Removed the stupid dim dip and fitted relays to control the lights and wipers, thus removing the high current systems from the ign switch and column.

Those little connectors are very good. I used lots of them when rewiring the dash.

You can now easily find good connectors used for high current batteries in all electrical scooters etc. For example, XT90 connectors are OK for a 40A continuous current, 90A peak, and cost pretty nothing on fleebay other Chinese market places.

I just eliminated the connector and joined the wires directly. The connector would be needed on a production line since the column assembly can't be integrated into the loom, but there's no reason for it subsequently. The column may eventually need to come out if/when it gets a body-off chassis repair, but snipping and reconnecting a couple of wires is trivial compared to that.
