The body off has begun
Discussion
Hi chris again.
Thanks for the pic's
looks like you the strap way worked well.
was going to do it that way also. but wanted the body out of the way. so went the body off party route.
I did notice how far back the engine brackets are.
could you post a pic of where the brackets goto on the engine.
Thanks
Leigh

Chris,
Give the webs of the trailing arm mounting brackets a good seeing to. Thats where mine went just in front of the bolt holes. Andy.

Well not much progress today - had to do some clearing out & trips to the tip but at least its made some space in the garage.
Took fuel tank and cradle off. Fuel tank is good, no surprises.
Cradle was a real bitch to get off, Nearside bottom bolt was a real problem, I struggled for ages but it the end I showed it who was boss with a hacksaw
I just couldn't get the socket to grip the bolt head.
This was why ! The
corners were rounded off the bolt head, guess I didn't have the socket on right to start with and buggered it up.

Fual tank cradle looks serviceable, lots and lots of rust came out the inside of the cradle after I'd given it a good seeing to with 2lb of stanleys finest, but no holes appeared and it feels strong if you twist the frame, so thats going back on. Not a huge deal if I have to change it at a later date with the body on anyway.

Also be aware that the tank does not sit in the middle of the cradle - I don't know why but something made me measure it - it hangs over one side 155mm and the other 175mm. Get it wrong and the tank filler won't line up with the hole in the boot.
Thats it folks........

No sorry guys just been busy at work (as you may have gathered by my lack of verbal diarrhoea on this forum!).
Sean (Trickjohn) has had some seat belt mounts made for me, until they arrive there's not much more to be done apart from remove the diff as I want to do the welding outside - so figured it may be kind of handy to have wheels to get it there! I know I could strip it & use my engine crane to move it about but doesn't sound as easy as wheels does it?
Also I've spoken to the local shotblasters and they do all sorts of coatings, had a long chat with the guy and I'm going to see him next week. He said they also do a bitumen based coating for extreme environments which I can't decide whether it sounds like a good idea for my outriggers or not at the moment, which is part of my reason for going to see them, he says he can show me the various options he has.
I posted their link on another forum somewhere but here it is again, some impressive projects in there.
He did fill me with confidence - he really seemed to know what he was talking about. We shall see.

OK after planning to remove the diff today that idea was quickly shelved - I for some reason thought the Torx bolts on the driveshafts were T40, but as TVRGIT has just told me they are T45, and I haven't got one. Will have to go and buy one tomorrow.
So instead I've
Cracked off the hub nuts on both trailing arms ready to strip them when they are off the car (dead easy with a 1m breaker bar and proper hub nut socket)
Removed the main electrical cables from starter to battery (in boot remember on V8S)
Removed all brake pipes (this was a swine took a while) though copper pipes are in great condition will probably re use them, flexible pipes also good but metal ends a bit scruffy so looking to replace those.
Removed fuel pipes
Removed steering rack
Removed anti roll bar
I photographed all items as I did them.
The outboard seat belt mounts on the outriggers are looking a bit thin - so looking to replace those too, so any advice on making new ones or getting them made appreciated.
Here it is looking a bit sad now, just diff and front & rear suspension to go.

Just need to remind myself what it looks like in one piece!

Couple of places I phoned said that they make them up as and when they need them, they didn't hold ready made parts. The nut welded on the inside is an all metal self locker, Adrian Venn said he held those.K
OK I posted this in another thread as well but bought these to undo the driveshaft bolts.

Worth every penny!
Had all driveshafts undone and off inside 30 minutes, and
me they were tight.
Fits really nicely past the driveshaft boot

and this is what it looks like after having undone 24 driveshaft bolts - not a scratch!

Just bought a second hand mig welder - I'm not planning to weld it myself but as there's a bit to do I thought I'd get it all tacked into position then get someone who can weld properly to come and finish it off. I have welded a bit before but not in anger, and nothing as important as seat belt mounts.
Once done the welder goes back on ebay hopefully for more than I paid for it!

Hmm, you're determined to get me into trouble with comments like this:
It's simply because they're expensive and noisy, and of course beautiful.
See, I knew could make a safe comment without getting into more trouble
