I,m sure I am not alone in the buzzing gear stick thing, has anyone found the cause or a cure?
(It's definitely not the gear knob by the way).
S2 Gearbox. Ford Type 'N' (aka Type '9').

It's a loose grub screw which holds the ball onto the stalk in my Tamora. The grub screw keeps working loose.

Jas,

I've got the same problem. And the three torx bolts that hold the gearstick "adapter" are tight as well????

It annoys the hell out of me, love to know how to cure it.

Cheers,
Dave.

I had the same problem, it was the adaptor not the knob.

My S2 did too. I think it was the 'Z' bend in the gear lever that was flexing and hitting resonance at certain revs. I thought maybe it would be possible to stiffen the gear lever to change the resonant frequency, but in the end I came up with a much better solution - traded it for the V8S!

Same problem. Turning the gearknob slightly generally stops the buzzing for me. It comes back after a (long) while though.

I've got the same problem as Jas, mine still gives off the buzz even with the gearknob removed

The most common cause of buzzing gear sticks is internal wear in the gearbox caused by people driving with their hand resting on the gear knob. This causes wear in the first gear synchro ring and the bearing on which it runs. This causes vibration in the first motion shaft which is transmitted through the gear stick.

The kind of news we all need!

Sorry about that Gregor. I am probably wrong, its most likely a noisy gear knob. No point in asking the question if you dont want the answer, but remember these cars are not new and the solution is to remove the roof, turn up the music and drive.(remembering not to rest your hand on the gear knob)

I've got the same issue. I rang MCC, a gearbox specialist in Gillingham, he believed the vibration of the gear stick is being caused by defective prop shaft bearings and not by the gearbox....and suggested it would be a waste of time and money to have the gearbox dismantled......I may well go ahead anyway.

I'm about to restore my S2, and one of the jobs on the list is to get the gearbox rebuilt using close ratios with Quaife internals. I will talk to the company who will build it to see if they can find a reason for the buzz. If they find a solution, i'll post it up!
