Just noticed today that my fan belt wasn't quite tight enough set about adjusting it and found it was at the end of adjustment on the alternator bracket. Too long.
Fitted it during the winter service and only driven a few miles so it hasn't stretched.

The belt is a Gates 6228MC as listed in the alternative parts and is 1200mm long.
It does work but want it a little tighter as it might foul the coolant hose above it.
Can keep it as a spare.

I had spotted this too...

The backend of my fan belt was a little loose and has been rubbing against the water pipe above it. I tried to tension up the alternator but found this to be at the end of it's travel. I am planning to get a Gates 6227MC (1 Inch shorter) and try this.

I also noticed that the previous owner left the fan belt on the outer pulley for the crank and tensioner so it was jumping around!

I'll let you know if it fits....

Hi Alan

see here too...

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... part no. S2 2.9 please ?

1200 is the right length I believe but you must also ensure you have the correct width of belt = 13mm IIRC, or your belt will sit too low in the "V" and so will appear too long

Replaced mine with a 1200 a few years back. Fits fine, you need to push the alternator bracket real hard and hold it in position before tightening the nut.

How can it it be tightened up after a few thousand miles when its given a little when its already at the extent of its adjustment?
The Gates one specified is wrong - Havn't had chance to look into it yet as still sorting out the bcensoredy wheel nut.

Maybe if it was wider it would sit better on the pulley but the one i have is the one listed on alternative parts and is wrong. Unless i have a different alternator mounting to standard.

Will investigate further!

You got me!

Well, long time listener, first time caller in my case! I currently am working an on S2 and am hoping to get her ready for the classic Le Mans this year... I'll post some pics up of my progress as soon as I can source a camera.

I do love the TVR, it's the only car I have owned that requires a hammer and drill as part of it's essential tools...

Thanks for that.

I'll update my info shortly then. S Club would be great if I can get all things done in time...

For the record, a Gates 6227MC also fits. This is 1175mm so as said, an inch shorter. This does mean that it's a tighter fit around the alternator when initially fitting and there are 3 hands required to fit at tension but, with mine now, the belt is nicley tensioned and the alternator tensioner travel is around half way rather than at full tension.

If the belt is too tight to fit easily with the adjustment slackened right off, remove the bolt that locks the sliding part of the bracket altogether, swing the alternator down a wee bit further (it will foul something at some stage) fit the belt, move the sliding part back until you can fit the bolt again and then proceed as normal to tension the belt.

worked for me...

Finally got round to getting the right belt myself today as said the Gates 6227mc 1175mm fits perfectly a little tight to get round the pulley at first but still has some adjustment when tensioned up. The old one will keep as a spare.

I have just looked up both of these Gates part numbers and they are both only 10mm wide. That is why the 1200mm one was too long as it sits too deep in the pulleys. I don't know where any of the Gates numbers came from but Wiz is indeed correct, the 6228MC will not fit correctly being only 10mm. You SHOULD be using a 13mm x 1200mm belt and whenever I need one that's just what I buy. Not by brand or part number, just by size. I do not know if there are any drawbacks to using the 10mm x 1175mm belt (possible premature failure?) but it is the wrong size for the pulleys, that much is fact I'm afraid.

Cheers all,
Carl.

interesting post, I've just had a look at my original belt from the car when new (kept it for no reason!), I replaced it with a QH 1200 a few years back. The original belt, and I assume this for 2 reason's, first, I have the full service history, every item changed from new on a very long print out and no mention of a new belt, secondly, the car has very little miles, so I would assume no need for a change. One thing I did notice when I changed the water pump was the old belt was difficult to remove, the new Quinton Hazel slipped on, no problem. The original belt is a UNIPART R2366 GCB 51168 0078 (that's what is printed on the side), the belt is 10mm wide and 7mm deep.

Is it not correct having a tight belt puts strain on the water pump?

Not particularly. They're designed to be belt driven and not going to be damaged unless the belt is massively over tensioned. You'll probably damage the belt before you damage the components its driving.
