Best part of Ealing to live in?

Richmond is nice enough but the center gets jammed regularly, especially since they're replacing all the pavements at the moment and making the roads a bit smaller. LOTS of buses make it quite "interesting" for cyclists. There's a Tesco, a Waitrose and a Marks & Spencer in the center along with several pubs and branches of the main banks, but for actual shopping your wife will probably go to Kingston or the Westfield Center as there's not much variety in terms of shops.
Frankly when it comes to London you're probably best coming out here and having a wander around the different areas you're looking at, in some areas you might get more noise from the planes at Heathrow, other bits might have more traffic than you're expecting etc etc. See which areas you feel comfortable walking around in and then go from there.

I'd say Kingston is nicer than Hillingdon, Hillingdon has a few small pockets of nice areas (Ickenham, Northwood, Hillingdon Village) and some right dumps, Hayes, Hayes End, West Drayton (West Drayton Green is okish)But I guess a lot depends on what you'd deem nice areas?
Personally I would ignore the ignorant comments from people who have never lived in Ealing. Ealing is a much better location than several of the others mentioned here. It is a very green borough with lots of parks and open spaces, it has a sense of community not seen in many London locations and it has some very nice areas to live in. Like many other areas it has some not so nice areas and the shopping amenities have been hit by the recession and Westfield opening a few stops along the central line. Location wise it has fabulous rail, road and air links so is great to get to and from.
Best areas - South Ealing, Northfields, Ealing Common and around Notting Hill School. Avoid West Ealing and Hanwell as these are rapidly becoming Southall overspill (although Southall is an amazing place to visit especially if you enjoy curry, I still visit at least once a month!).
I lived there for over 10 years and had to move away, I still visit often and I miss it like hell. It is the only London suburb I would move back to.
Dare I also say it doesn't have the "snob" factor of the Richmonds etc. and hasn't attracted the sort of people who seem to have overtaken those boroughs (yummy mummys in their big 4x4rs etc.). Many people I know who live in Ealing are very successful e.g. I know 2 board directors at FTSE 100 companies who live there, so don't believe anyone who tells you that people who could afford to would choose to live elsewhere.

I was born and bred in the Borough albeit not actually in Ealing. I knew it well - once. At that time, the old Victorian places around Eton Rise and the roads nearby were desirable. Pitshangar Lane and Scotch Common too. Haven Green area was close to the main shops and also had decent old houses. As already said, Hanwell, West Ealing, and those areas never were anything but poorer compared with Ealing Broadway. Gunnersbury Avenue towards the Common has been affluent in its heyday with more than one blue plaque to be seen. But the traffic is horrific...

Richmond is the most expensive borough in London. There are loads of places cheaper in Zone 4 and/or West London. I'm not a fan of Ealing but then again i don't know the area. I feel safer in parts of South London(!) but first appearances can be deceiving. Most of my friends live around Teddington, so it's probably the area i would choose to live in.Edited by fido on Sunday 10th February 15:04
