Hhmmm,Rayvon's replies got me thinking

"the bus times for Chester to Newcastle and Ouston to Newcastle are near identical. The advantage being a bus leaves Chester every 10 mins"

"The only decent shop is S & L motor spares"

An intimate knowledge of bus timetables AND the whereabouts of a good car accessory shop can mean only one thing..........TVR ownership wink

Trust me, it takes a lot longer to get from Chester to Newcastle by bus or car at rush hour than from Ouston (or any other time for that matter).
Wouldnt say a lot longer at rush hour. If you go the back road way from chester through pelton fell then pelton, Ouston is only 5 minutes from chester, and there is never any traffic on that route.

Re living in Gateshead, I used to live on Joicey Road and loved it. I work in Birtley so it was easy to get to work and easy to get into Newcastle on the weekend. Pubs were all good round there, and an excellent selection of shops, banks, take aways etc.

I now live in Durham as the Mrs is a country bumpkin with a horse so gateshead wasnt suitable, but I would rather live in Low Fell than where I do now!

My parents live on the estate next to Heworth Golf Club and the Green, nice place and quiet, and easy to get everywhere.

Hi Folks. I am about to move to Newcastle. I got a job in Newcastle Uni and I was wondering if Teams is a nice and safe area to live. I've heard that it may be a bit dodgy area but flats and houses looks very nice there. Btw, we are a couple. Any comments?

DONT move to Teams. It’s full of chavs, druggies and scumbags. One of the worse areas in Gateshead.

Look at low fell area which is probably the best part of Gateshead. All depends on your budget.

Teams no, Staithes yes. I've got two houses on the Staithes, my sister lived in one for 9 years and loved it. A few of the tenants that have rented off me have ended up buying down there, really nice estate. Having said that Gateshead is the wrong side of the river for the Uni.

Agree. Staithes is nice. Have a couple of friends living there. It's okay getting into Quayside area from there on the bus, on foot or pedal power. Car is okay too though by passes the nice quiet river route into town, which to me would be one of the best reasons to live in Staithes. I live in Low Fell and love it, but rush hour into Newcastle is a pain from here. Plenty of buses but you know, they're buses!

It's often really hard to answer these questions without knowing what your priorities are, budget, schooling, houses or flats, parking etc. There are many little pockets around that are nice but you wouldn't necessarily want to walk too far from home. Then there are areas that are on the edge of some nice greenery but would be compromised in other ways.

For me though, I think if I were working in Newcastle itself, I'd fancy being able to use the Metro, which would probably mean living on the North side of the river (most of the areas served by the Metro to the south, anywhere near the city are iffy, though St James Park by Gateshead Stadium is okay). Ilford road area is nice as is anything around Gosforth. Just for starters.

Thanks all for clarifying this for me. But let me make mine clear too. By Teams I mostly mean those nice-looking propoerties around North Side street and July Courtyard for example. Are you pointing at the same area by "Staithes"? Is there doggy too? I know commuting to Newcastle Uni from there deos not sound very rational, but houses there look so cozy and tempting that I may want to suffer from the pain in the backsmile Having said that my budget is 600-700 PCM for an unfurnished property and 700-800 PCM if it's furnished.

Yeah, that area is all the Staiths Development. All nice, all the way along the river there IMO. A guy I used to buy sandwiches from set up a really a nice cafe there a few years ago too. Do you cycle at all? It's a great place to commute by bike from. There are regular buses to the quayside as well but not that convenient for the Uni areas. If you're driving in, it's probably no worse than any other place that sort of distance from the centre.

Most important matter, the Tudor Rose Pub is walking distance from there and is decent enough. smile

Hopefully my highly accurate map will help. The red areas aren't actually that bad. Or at least aren't terrible. I wouldn't want to live there or anything but I wouldn't be expecting anything too stabby if I had to walk through there. That smaller green circle is a new development. It's not in the nicest spot but the estate itself is nice. I think you're probably along the right lines already looking at Staiths.

Excellent! Well done and many thanks Gad-Westy for your epic help (the map). Now I know where to look at for a property. Also, thanks for suggesting that pub. I'll definitely stop by to have a pint there.

My two are on May Courtyard, so yes we are talking about the same area. The development won loads of awards and is very different to your typical estate, basketball hoops and table tennis tables are dotted around and some of the communal areas have BBQ’s etc. The streets have some weird names and I’d hate to be the Postman smile I’ve just rented my 2 bedroom for £625 per month, I’ve seen similar for £700 so be careful not to overpay. The cafe is nice, it was the sales office when I bought mine.

Eighton Banks is a very nice Village with a few decent pubs,Birtley is also worth a punt as it has plenty of shops and the local schools are very good, currently a lot of new builds on the northside area very close to the A1.Also agree with SeanyD on the Saltwell Park area of Gateshead especially since the park had £M's spent on it.
I used to go out with a lass from Eighton Banks. Nice little place but I found the locals a bit "you aint from round here are ya sonny" for my liking.

My last house was in Eighton Banks, lovely place but I bit too close to the Wrekenton laugh
I moved when my Son was born as there were no other kids in the street as it's full of coffin dodgers smile

I'm another currently living on the Staiths.

Definitely by far the nicest area of Teams / Dunston. I do like the estate, its a nice area with mostly nice people, decent little cafe. The place does get targetted by the local thieves, so watch your expensive bikes or anything else that isn't bolted down.

Nice and close to the city centre, 30 minute walk. Buses are a bit crap considering the proximity to Newcastle. Parking is a bit of a 'mare on the estate and looks set to get worse if they get their way and apply restrictions early next year.

Overall I can recommend.
