My Dad bought a couple of cars from B&K Thomas. Always had good service and seemed to help him out whenever he needed it.

We would often go for a drive out to Melton Mowbray to have a look around the TVR garage there. I've got good memories of that garage.

Didn't buy mine from TMS but always had good service there, and up until recently a lot of the original staff did still work with TVR's, and even some still on the original site, and James Agger is still selling them. wink

some of the Mansfield dealerships that are no longer there from memory are

Nottingham road :-
Lucas - Toyota ( now a car park )
Speeds - Volvo
Windsors - british leyland ( now a gym )
Nevilles - Vauxhall ( now being turned into houses )

Chesterfield road :-
Evinsons - Ford ( now Tesco )
Newbolds - Volkswagen ( changed to Vertu Vw and went downhill fast)
Autocar - various second hand cars ( my dad got a Fiat 131 mirafiori from them early 80's )

There was also a small dealership that seemed to specialise in Lancia but I can't recall the name

also a bit of the beaten track, anyone remember Paul Haywood cars Kirklington,

My dad bought his bmw from there and it was always worth a visit to see some interesting cars.

I used to get petrol form Windsor’s all the time (we had an account there)
In the era of free glasses with fuel they used to just give our boss a big box of them rather than keep giving out tokens to us van drivers. Tbf he didn’t really want them so he just used to share them out amongst us.
I also got my first car from there. A pale metallic blue 1275gt with a recon engine which I put in a ditch and wrote off a year later frown
I also remember he had a jag and when a water pump failed on it and they couldn’t get one for several weeks because of strikes THEY put him in contact with someone who worked on the production line who stole one for him and they fitted. The good old days of BL.

Morkel and Carnill were BMC dealers in Nottingham. Linda Carnill (daughter of Carnill) was a ladies champion in the Nottingham Sports Car Club, and used to be a very good friend of mine.....

I bought my second and third cars from Morkel and Carnill on Talbot Street, Nottingham. My second car, bought in 1972, was a three year-old Mini, one lady owner from new, 21,000 miles. I kept it for four years and it was 100% reliable. It had done about 55,000 miles when I sold it privately. My third car was my first brand new car, a Triumph Dolomite Sprint, bought in 1976. It was lovely when it was running but otherwise a disaster. I gave up after 3 years and 28,000 miles. I thought Morkel and Carnill was a great dealership. I got decent deals there and they were always friendly and professional.

Going back to the 1980s I seem to remember when driving into Mansfield on the A60 just after what used to be Boneham & Turner Precision Engineers (where Sainsbury's is now) was Windsor & Stephenson which sold farm machinery including of all things Combine Harvesters, am sure they used to have one parked up on the front pitch which was enormous. At the Sainsbury's traffic light junction there used to be a bridge, and just after the bridge was another car dealer on the left, and an even smaller car dealer which I can't remember the name of that sat well off the road that sold Opel cars, opposite them was of course Windsors garage (now Pizza Hut) which had a very large open showroom and used to sell BL cars like Jaguar, Allegro, Maxi, and the truly ugly Princess cars.

I seem to think that Lucas used to sell Subaru cars because they always seemed to have one on a stand, I never used to see many customers in the place. As you quite rightly say, it's now a car-park. And opposite it where Gala Bingo used to be is going to be a Travelodge hotel so all is changing again.

I do remember Paul Haywood cars in Kirklington which was located on the LHS on the A617 as you entered the village because my father bought an Audi Coupe from them, I used to enjoy a drive out to see the car collection because they had a very eclectic mix of motors inc Porsche 911, 928, Audi Quattro, Ferrari, etc. Is no longer there of course and has been turned into a couple of houses which blend into the rest. Funnily enough I scanned a few photos a few years ago so will have to upload them onto here.

The garage near the bridge was 'Walkers'. They sold Chysler/Talbot...possibly Rootes before that. I too remember the Opel garage and I'm not sure but that may have been Walkers too. I think Lucas did have Subaru at some time but in the seventies they were Austin. Windsor and Stephenson were agricultural dealers too and later just became Windsors and finally were united with Hammonds (of Daybrook)

Photos would be good

Cheers for the info, will take a look later this evening to see if I can find the scanned photos of Paul Haywood Cars in Kirklington which I think I took in the 1980s, unfortunately I never took any photos of the car dealers in Mansfield which is a shame.

I seem to remember Lucas selling Subaru as well,

I also seem to remember a petrol station being next to Windsors, near where Halfords is now, on the site that was B&Q till a few years ago that also sold cars,
is that the Talbot dealership you're referring to?

we used to be regular visitors to Paul Haywood's

My Brother had eyes on a AM V8 they had up for sale for something like £5K which seems ridiculous now.

plus drooling over a Ferrari 308 and seeing a delorean in there when they were still a newish car

Found a few photos of Paul Haywood Automobiles in Kirklington, astonishingly the black Audi in the background of one of the photos is the one my dad bought.

I also took a few photos of a Ferrari 308 outside a used car dealership on the left-hand side of Chesterfield Road (when driving out of Mansfield), which I think was on opposite side of the road to Newbolds VW dealership. Looking closely at a few pics it appears to be quite close to the Dog & Duck pub.

I need to find the original photos and negatives to see if I wrote the date on them.

Excellent photos. If I can I will take a shot of the location of Paul Haywood's lot....all houses ...now when I next go through Kirklington

I wonder if the garage on Chesterfield Road is 'Miles for Smiles'?

Just thought of another. The Mazda dealer which stood where Sytner MINI is now. And, Speeds Volvo on Radcliffe Road, West Bridgford.
Thread resurrection. Does anybody remember the name of that Mazda dealer? We bought our 2nd (and last) new car from that site in 2001, a Crystal Blue MX5 1.8i (one of the then just launched NB2.5 models). Bugging me that I can't remember the name of the dealer as I'm sure it wasn't as simple as Nottingham Mazda. Was it Godfrey Davis or have I just imagined that?
