Any info on the Speed cameras around birmingham on the gantries were no speed restrictions, drove down towards London on Saturday morning and back north late same day , at around 70-80 MPH, been told the Redflex hadecs 3 can be turned on at any time, maybe 20 tickets arriving ?

Any info on the situation in that area

How soon after the 50 boards light up do the Camera's become active?

Say you are 50 yards from a gantry doing 70 when the signs light up.
Obviously you can't brake that quickly so are you going to get points or do you need to do an emergency brake?

AFAIK there is a grace period after a limit changes down (seem to remember something like 1 minute for Surrey Police)

HADECS3 to the side of the gantry. HADEC3 cameras are active when the reduced limit is showing. Tip: you can spot when approaching a HADECS3 camera by the pole with 3 small digital cameras pointing towards the gantry about 150 yards before.

Plus the HADECS3's are painted bright yellow

Yeah, I know.

The thing is though, there seems to be a sudden surge in people actually getting caught out by them over the last couple of weeks. All was quiet up until then (as far as I'm aware).

Until recently, I took them with a pinch of salt, and ignored them as the posted speed restrictions didn't seem to match the traffic flow/volume. Maybe I've been lucky until now.

I regularly do M42 J3 to J6 early in the morning, I always make sure I am at 70mph where the cameras are even though the speed limit is not usually reduced at that time. On the way home its academic, gantry's normally say 40or 50 traffic speed are 20mph!

Same here (I live in Redditch), at all times of the day and night. It's become a lottery. Best avoided if possible from now on I think.

I've kept to the limit (+5 for speedo error) on smart motorways since they started using the average speed ones. The risk of finding out if they work or not with a nice letter from West Mids Constabulary is not worth the 50 seconds you'd gain by going 65 instead of 55 over a 5 mile stretch.

I also live in Redditch and travel the the m42(J3) and m6 (J5) between 4:30am-5:30am and 6:30 -7:30 in the evening. Have seen the cameras flash multiple times and you can't miss seeing it even during the day. Some of the cameras are hidden by trees just before the gantry so the triple cameras on a pole are easiest to spot.

Regularly have the limits down to 40 at that time in the morning with minimal traffic and no roadworks mad

Always assume a camera is active. I am also pretty sure as of the start of this year they were switched on regardless of there being a temporary limit in place.

I've stuck to these temp limits for ages now, baffles the mind that people still manage to come off the M54 at 10A and fly through all the gantry limits and get confused why they get flashed by the cameras doing 70 in the fast lane when the gantries show 50. In addition, those cameras are ruddy bright when it's dark. Think they've been up for a few months now.

Joined the M40 today northbound at Henley in Arden. I had the usual amusement that the variable sign said 60mph, but literally 10metres past it is the old fixed NSL sign, so the 60mph only applies for a second.

10 seconds (from my recent Motorway awareness course, backed up by info from the horse's mouth - a supervisor at a recent Highways England Control Centre open day.)
