Holme Pierrepont is why I am in Nottingham, in part.In the 90s I was a windsurfer, and on the cover of Notts Uni prospectus was a picture of a windsurfer jumping off a wave at Holme Pierrepont. Except is was fake. The prevailing wind is in the wrong direction to do any meaningful windsurfing there. It is a 2k rowing course.
I now live near Matlock but can get to Maid Marian Way in half an hour so this would be easily do-able.

We haven’t mentioned the castle (which it isn’t), it’s a pleasant way to spend an hour or so.
I thought it wasn’t meant to be great after the refurb, the trip advisor reports are a mixed bag. We are very local but haven’t bothered due to the bad press (we even get a locals discount)SLK55AMG said:

I live 400 yards away and hadn’t been since 1988! We had a very pleasant time. Also, once you’ve paid your tenner you can go as many times as you like for the next year.A lot of people on Tripadvisor are expecting a castle, which of course it isn’t.

So, have we been any help?
Steady on! Only managing PH once per day but yes great suggestions thanks. I will take the next few days to research them and come back with any questions, Have spent the last 2 days visiting stately homes around Cardiff and so NT properties will also be in the mix.MarkGArgyle said:

Well, NT throws you at calke abbey, kedleston, or Belton house. Belvoir castle isn't nt but worth a look. They're a long half hour away though. Nearer Nottingham are the ruddington museums.MarkGArgyle said:

Post bump; seems my son has found a girl in Nottingham so thinking about an overnight there coming up from Cardiff. Any recommendations of things to do for a middle aged couple with a 13yo in tow whilst the eldest does his thing?
