At the end of the month I am moving from North Scotland to five mins east of B-O-T town centre.

Anyone from the area?

Any tips would you give an incomer with regards to good or bad food, pubs etc, if any?
I enjoy a pint and a chat / game of pool and a bit of banter but I dont have any tattoos or own any football shirts...

Where do i find the best chippy and curry?

Also, i will be needing to sign up to broadband , are there any companies I should avoid ?

Cheers smile

I'm in Burton(ish).

That side of the river I'd be going to the bulls head in repton but you'll need to book it's very popular. The dial and the winery are both good in the centre or Pascal's in Branston for something a bit posher.

The best bit of Burton is the road out of there!

I grew up there and it's not bad as it used to be, but for nice pubs I'd be looking at the nearby villages, of which there are loads. The Bulls Head at Repton, the Dragon at Willington, the Brewery Tap is nice, as is the Cask and Pottle in Tutbury.

The best chippy used to be the one on Wetmore Road (I can't remember the name), but no idea what it's like these days.

The house is actually on the outer edge of Winshill but the (cul de sac) street looks nice and quiet and well kept.

Looking at the local 'high street' on street view has made us decide we probably wont be slowing down as we drive through..

ETA: I should add. we are just renting that place while we look for somewhere nicer to buy. W are not 'moving to' Winshill.

Its a massive brewery town, so the smell of maltings is alwasys in the air.
Its a very.. industrial town. Not prety, but interesting
Agree with the others: some great villages nearby with great pubs. Youll be fine
Close to Curburgh and donington for motor racing too

Google suggests it might be inventively named, the Wetmore Road Fish Bar. It gets excellent reviews and looks like a five minute drive. Thanks.

The company that owns the Bulls Head at Repton also has the Swan at Walton. Burton is also a short drive to the Peak District - particularly good early on a Sunday morning for a “brekkie run” if you’re interested wink

Baltic Towers is also worth a visit if you like a curry, though you’ll need to take your own alcohol biggrin

At least you're the right side of the river, away from the industry. I live on Brizlincote Valley.

I had to google that..looks like I am (or will be) pretty close. The street I am on skirts along the edge of Abbot Beyne School playing fields, which seems to put me on the 'correct' side of Winshill?

I think they also own the Joiners Arms at Quarndon, brilliant stone baked pizzas, but it took me several visits before I realised that you can go half and half on the toppings!

Back to OP, I know that area reasonably well and echo what others have said, there are lots of nice villages in the surrounding area that I'd personally look towards if I was buying a place in the area.

If you like curry I'd suggest popping in to Anoki, its on the southbound lane of the A38, so from Burton you'd have to go up to Egginton and come back down whilst keeping your eyes peeled for the sign and slip road that are about a quarter of a miles down from the junction. It can be a tad pricey though, last time I took the missus it was £70 for two (she'll be drinking tap water on the next visit!)

I live in Swadlincote which is only 4-5 miles the right side of the water. It’s a varied area but there are some nice parts where you can get a very good value house compared to burton.

In regards to pubs etc, the Dragon, Bulls head etc are okay but (the latter especially) it’s become more a place to be seen and to be tagged at. Last few times I’ve been to the Bulls head/swan at Walton it’s been average at best. Drinking wise there are lots of ale pubs in burton, for example burton bridge brewery (just over the old bridge), the Dog which has won many camra awards and there are also a cluster of proper pubs near the station. Food wise I really like the Bridge inn at branston. It’s not very big so booking is required but the guy who runs it is great and although the menu isn’t vast it’s of a very high quality for the price. It’s also canal side so the beer garden is great in the summer to have a drink and a pizza.

We did look at a few houses in Swadlincote but house viewing/buying/selling is hard when the move is 400 miles and the market can move pretty quickly for a decent house.

One house we were considering was a quite generously proportioned 4 bed town house in what seemed to be a nice enough bit of Church Gresley. It looked like a bargain at £200k but it sold before ours did.

I am hoping that the rental we have found suits us and we can buy it to avoid having to move again any time soon!

Thanks for the tips on pubs, i will take a wander around and check them out in a couple of weeks!
