Hey , I’m looking in to taking motor sports up in my spare time, off road,track days,rally , being new to this and only having minimal knowledge and also feeling that I’ve opened a can of worms when it comes to regulations and spec etc when I’ve been doing my own research

I’m just asking if there is anybody that has more knowledge when it comes to this areaEspecially safety wise , also it intriguing that I’ve noticed that motor sports cars have different types of seatbelts lot more belts also

Is there anyone that would let me try on your racing cars seatbelt being I’ve never worn this type of safety belt , to get the feeling of how it is worn also the putting them on etc

I don't have any 'specialist' knowledge in this field but a couple of years ago I was invited along with my friend and his son down to Bedford Autodrome for a full track day. The car used was an old 1.8 MX5 with everything stripped out and replaced with all the necessary safety gear, transported in a box trailer, I think the whole lot only cost less than 5 grand. It was the best car entertainment day I ever had, and the car performed fantastically and was so much fun to drive. True to say there were some very tasty vehicles turning up but it seemed that lots of them spent more time in the pits being either repaired or fettled with than out on track. The Mazda ,however, was absolutely ragged all day with only a break for lunch and never missed a beat, then was put back in the box for the journey home. Although it has a 'hairdresser's car' reputation, if I were to get into track car days myself, that's the car I would start off with, massive 'bangs per buck' !! Good luck and enjoy.

I cannot comment on anything other than track days.

To do a track day you need to have a full driving UK licence or an FIA race licence (I have been overtaken on a track day by a 16 year old girl driving an Aston Martin GT4), and a crash helmet. The helmet can be open face in a tin top car, but has to be full face in an open top car.

Your car needs to be roadworthy, but not necessarily taxed and insured unless they specify road cars only for that particular event.
Your clothing only needs to include long sleeves and long trousers. No tee shirts and shorts.

Anyone who values their own safety makes sure that their car will fare reasonably should an accident happen. By which i mean that if the vehicle is an open topped car there is some roll over protection. Most modern cars will protect you in the event of an accident. I usually see one car make friends with the barriers on every track day, but car on car crashes are rare. Your normal road insurance won't cover anything on track, but you are only liable for your own damage.

Fire proof gear, fire extinguisher systems, full welded in roll cages, etc etc is not required - they are for racing, and to race you will need an FIA licence.

You car can be standard road spec for your first track day, but be aware that you may need to cool the brakes regularly and the tyres on heavier cars may not be road legal by the end of a track day.
