As we've hit most places now 4 of us guys (in our 40s btw) are off there next Saturday. What's there (pubs and bars) that we should go to? It'd be nice to go somewhere a bit lively/with music and not full of kids?

Personally, having lived there, I would stick to Clifton bars and pubs, lots of nice pubs all in the same locality, and shouldn't be as student-y as usual as they have buggered off for summer.

As above really. It's a bit of a cliche, but that's where I'd be heading. Wapping Wharf is worth a look too, but I'd stay away from the waterfront and the centre.

On that note, if you're in Clifton look into the Cori Tap!

Clifton is 'nice' but to be honest it's also a bit quiet. Whiteladies Road isn't what it was either.

Contrary to instinct I'd go:

1 Start at Giuseppe on the Steps for a very decent Italian meal (good steaks too). Plenty of other places to eat but this is a family owned place with great atmosphere, basic but honest and a bit of a Bristol institution for those who know.

2 Cross the steps (all of ten feet) to the quite lively Vodka Revolution for beer, vodka shots, music, nightlife scenery etc etc (their music playlist is not bad either)

2a. If you want you can then cross the road to the Slug and Lettuce for more of the same.

3 Be pre-booked into the Milk Thistle speakeasy on the Centre to continue drinking in a more chilled-out way.

4 Get kebab from one or other of the kebab trailers, I prefer the one outside St Nicks market on Corn St.

I really should know better than all of this at my age... biggrin but for a chilled but fun night out with the boys (we're in our 40s/50s) that's what we'd do, or similar.

Is the Bierkeller still there? Happy memories 15 odd years ago of headbanging and getting absolutely sloshed on cocktails served by the pint, with a free shot!
