I am shortly due to move down there to your fine county.
Going to be living just outside Holsworthy in a small hamlet.

Looking forward to a slower pace of life and living 20 minutes from the beach!

Being a city dweller in a mild part of the country a car has always been ok for getting about other than the odd snow day when I won’t go out anyhow.

I am wondering if we will find a 4x4 necessary?
I’m thinking more of the times when you have to go 2 or more wheels on the verge or through the occasional flooded lane
Will it be essential?

Also, are there any members of the Holsworthy motor club on here?

Hi mate, sorry our Devon friends are being a bit stand-offish, us Cornwall lot are much more friendly
4x4 are generally pointless most if the time, we are surrounded by sea which means the air is full of salt so snow never lasts long, although that now means we will have the worst winter for decades...

But, welcome, regardless

Thank you

Im going to be very close to the border so hopefully will feel some Cornish warmth.

My wife and I have plenty of Devonian and Cornish heritage between us, so we are looking forward to life down there.

Having asked the question about the 4x4s Ive reached the conclusion that if it gets that rough you just dont go out.

Really looking forward to days at Widemouth bay (we are both keen body boarders) so all that salt is welcome.

Mad Cornish, probably put jam on their toast before the butter too. It’s the tin in their water, they can’t help it. nuts

I’m on the western edge of Dartmoor, no need for a 4x4 but winter tyres certainly help.

Always jam first... but I’m a northerner in exile down here.

I am having a long weekend near Holsworthy soon....

Apart from Bude and Clovelly, are there any 'must see' decent villages/pubs in the area?

You need a 4x4 less down here than most places. It's warmer and seldom snows. When it does snow the place simply grinds to an even slower pace than normal and waits for the thaw. Like anywhere most folk have 4x4s because they want them. Not because they need them.
