I've driven my R8 down there no problem at all - low ceilings, exhausts, echoes and all that Supercar suitable (in terms of wide spaces / single spaces etc)?
However I do park on the end of a row to ensure I can open the car door or if possible, as far away from other cars. IMHO it's a very secure car park, never had a problem however it might be a different case with a wider car that's more exotic/appealing to the public.

Surrounding streets are fine heading towards old Portsmouth/Southsea. If you head towards the historic dockyard then I agree. If in doubt, and with the station so close, the train is a good (and very convenient) alternative.
The price of parking isn’t cheap either:
Up to 2 hours, £2.90
2 – 3 hours, £3.90
3 – 4 hours, £6.00
4 – 5 hours, £6.90
5 – 7 hours, £8.00
7 – 9 hours, £10.00
9 – 10 hours, £12.00
10 – 24 hours, £20.00
West quay Southampton is £5 for the day and far better shops, likewise festival place at Basingstoke has cheaper parking and better shops.
Park and ride is good. It's out of the way, so the car park hasn't got people walking through it. It's a big open car park and there are always spaces right at the back away from other cars. You can usually find a big corner space. The bus is quick and easy and I believe it's cheaper than parking in Gunwharf itself.
