Hello

As title really I'm seriously considering a move down from London to Pompey as a FTB.

Grew up in Bournemouth so I know the Dorset/Hampshire area well, but compared to Bmth, the reason I'm looking at Pompey is it means I can have a garage within budget..... And period Victorian architecture which is defo my preferred.

From research I think Hilsea area might be a good fit; nice housing stock, in budget, near sea, near north of town (for ease of driving out the peninsula). Am I far wrong? I've scheduled the first of several pub crawls around the area in a couple of weeks to confirm so just thought someone might have input or suggestions..

Budget is 300k max btw

I've lived around Portsmouth all my life and until moving off the island 4 years ago lived in Hilsea, Copnor and Baffins. When moving off the island we looked at staying but ruled it out for various reasons.

We look at Southsea and it's great if you like socialising/being near the beech but expensive and comes with extended travel time getting on and off the island. Those last two points are why we discounted it.

Baffins was a nice area but again expensive, lack of parking and still a bit of a chug getting off the island.

Hilsea is the best of both worlds - not too expensive, much easier to get on and off the island plus more likely to get more for your money. Yes you're not close to the social side but Pompey has a plethora of taxi services. However we were looking for a larger property which Hilsea didn't provide.

We lived in Hilsea on the relatively new estate north of Alexandra Park - you should get a house and garage/drive for £300k but don't expect it to be a mansion.

I’ve been a Southsea resident for 4 years renting near the seafront and this year purchased in north Southsea. Originally I wanted a drive/garage but realised the access to restaurants, the sea front, station at Fratton and walking distance to friends was a better compromise.

I always discounted Hilsea as you’re far enough from the sea that you’d need to drive and take taxis for any nights out. So if you’re doing that you may as well live off the island and get more for your money in the surrounding areas like Portchester and Waterlooville.

On a positive note some great local bars and breweries.

Portsmouth is great! I live in London most of the time but have a place down here for the weekends (my son lives here). It’s easy on the train and once off the island you can get to London in 1hr20 driving (I live in SW London). I have a garage for the cars and it has the sea which is a must. I grew up on the south coast of wales so need to see the sea 🤪. Do it and don’t look back.... plus with all this working from home who needs to be in London anymore 🙄

Have you considered Port Solent?

Yes, slightly out of town but a nice vibe to it and since Gunwharfs creation, it’s popularity has wained and all the much better for it! Always strikes me as a nice feel to it and straight onto the motorway whilst having the boardwalk in walking distance to have a beer within the marina. Prices very reasonable compared to Gunwharf or Ocean Village.

Only small downside is there is a management fee to be paid to the estate but it’s a modest sum.
