I am moving to Dorset in a couple of weeks - Shaftesbury area. Where are the good driving roads and where do I have to watch out for speed cameras etc.

Make sure you take the top road to blandford from Shaftesbury (via Compton Abbas airfield). The main low road is very windy but dangerous and villages and hgv’s make it a pain.

I live in Poole and have to travel a long way to get on anything like a decent road, there are speed cameras all over the place and the roads are very busy, may be better towards the North of Dorset. The top road between Blandford and Shaftesbury is decent but used as a rat run.

The B3081 out of Shaftesbury up Zig Zag hill then on is a great road. Also the coast road from Weymouth to Bridport

Yes both good roads, the coast road from Weymouth to Bridport has superb views over Chesil Beach.

I try to take the Boxster whenever I have to visit our office in Wimborne. The section following zig-zag hill is fun, but you can get stuck behind one or many cars/vans/lorries. I'm usually there pretty early so avoid the traffic.

Is it stickered?
I'm approx 20mins away from Shaftesbury and commute through it twice a day on my way to the Coast

OK, you take it - I'll use the unclassified road which runs parallel to it instead.

Another vote from me for this stretch. Great views and enough space to hustle tongue out

I really like the roads (A354, A350 and A30, and some that join them together) between Blandford, Shaftesbury and Salisbury that go through Cranbourne Chase. Not all strictly Dorset as you end up in Wiltshire but I often head down to Bridport from Berks down the A303 of an early early morning and cut through Salisbury. Beware of tractors that are plentiful, and the summer weekend of the Dorset Steam fair is very busy when its on.

The coast road from Weymouth and West Bay is great and picturesque, but be careful, there are regularly serious accidents on that road. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CHBF_en-GBGB9...

I’ve always chickened out of taking my 911 up or down ZigZag hill....worried about the car scrapping it’s overhangs.

Plenty of good and not too busy roads around here and nudging into Wilts and Somerset, some of which mentioned above. Close to Shaftesbury there are regularly mobile cameras in East Stour (A30). I generally avoid south of A31 and east of Bere Regis, as it is too busy to be fun.

They resurfaced it a couple of years ago, a lot smoother and unless your car’s been significantly lowered you’ll be ok.

That was last year, idiots closed it for resurfacing at the same time they were doing works on the main road up through Spread Eagle rolleyes
