....... I have three houses including the one I live in, which is Cheadle Hulme. I then have a house in Heald Green, and another one in Handforth. I have lived in Altrincham, and Macclesfield, and I was born in Bramhall.

Cheadle Hulme, Heald Green and Handforth are worth looking at, with fairly simple routes into Manchester! Bramhall would be my choice, because it has retained an up market air about it, and isn't overly expensive, but it is more expensive than the other three!

Northwich is ok, but not ideal for commuting to Manchester, Altrincham, Bowdon and Hale are probably out of your reach financially.

The three i suggested are worth looking at, all have highs and lows, it is a case of knowing the area, but feel free to PM me, and I'll give you my number, and should you want any detailed info on any area, I will try to help.

OP, depending on where you work will, and your idea of acceptable commute, will depend on where you want to live.

From Barlowmoor road into town in the morning at 8am it is circa about 30minutes nose to tail to parking, and then up to 15mins walking.

Train and Tram network makes it easier, motorcycle makes it faster, car makes it more comfortable.

Tram is being extended, so an idea is to look where that goes. HS2 is also coming through Cheshire - although not stopping (except at Crewe).

Most locals do not like me bringing attention to this area in North Manchester. Saddleworth is around 23 miles from the airport and I used to commute it every day in around 40 minutes. The drive to the city is relatively quick depending on traffic. The bus to the city is an hour so assume you can do the 11 miles in 25 minutes.

Not exactly what you were looking for. But............

This sold for 315k and is a 4 bedroom house.

this is the view and just by the white house on the right is the entrance to trails that go on for miles. Ideal for hiking and mountain biking.

This is not my house, 20 years ago mine was behind with a double garage. Dobcross is the village and has retained its truly English countryside culture. You are not walking to bars, instead you walk to good pubs.

this is the next village on Yanks weekend

this is 3 miles away in Greenfield

You said you were country people.

We are currently renting on Nell Lane. It has a bad name but we’ve really enjoyed it there but we are fed up of renting now and want to get on the property ladder. Thanks for all your suggestions. I will have a look into Gatley. The ones towards Derbyshire look lovely but probably further away from the airport than I would like.

Has anybody any knowledge about the Northwich area? We went for a look last Sunday and had a walk around and it looked really nice there and the houses are really affordable.
Used to live in Northwich, and then Chorlton. Now live in Gatley.

Northwich is a nice enough market town, but suffers from being essentially in the sticks relative to Manchester. Trains are a good hour to Picadilly which is a chore. Road access is good, especially since they completed the Mere bypass. Town itself is nothing special, on the run down side in the centre. I lived in Kingsmead which is on the southern side almost in Davenham. Quiet sort of neighbourhood really. Lived there for just over 11 years. House prices were flat as a pancake there in that time. Airport is fairly easy, but it's ~£50 in a cab, or awkward public transport.

Chorlton, nice but overpriced for what it is. Mind you I lived over near the green, Nell Lane has some reputation by comparison. Much more crime than Northwich, but then all of Manchester does really. My car insurance sky rocketed when I moved from a nice safe Cheshire postcode to a Manchester code.

Gatley seems good so far. Seems I bought at the right time if it's on the up. I was originally looking at Stretford, but actually prefer Gatley I think; prices were similar. No tram to town without a long walk can be annoying given the train is unreliable.

To concur with Hobo you definitely get better value north of Manchester.

I live in a village about 13 mike's south of Manchester and anything bigger than a 2 bed terrace is ridiculous money.

The downside is you're the other side of Manchester. Not really a problem for the city centre, but for instance the airport is South West, so rather than getting straight there in minutes you have to get all the way around the M60 or through the middle of town.

I considered North Manchester as it's better priced, but I commute along the M56 and adding an hour+ on to my commute did not appeal.

I used to commute from the house behind the one I pictured to the end of the run way at Manchester airport. Most of the time it was quicker to go through Manchester than use the M60 in the mornings. I would set off around 7:30 and arrive at 8:15. This was 2004 though so times may have changed.

City centre has been pretty rough for cars the past few years as they keep digging up all the major routes. So you either get snarled in that mess or join the snarl on the M60. frown

The city centre is a total disaster for cars now. Truly appalling.
We get the train in now if we are going out.

Commuting would be a nightmare as there is zero parking near the station and the trains are rammed, and not cheap.

Nobody suggested Marple yet so I'll throw it in. I've lived there all my life and it's a great place. Two train stations in to town (25 mins ish) and the peak district about a 10 min drive south. House prices have gone up a fair bit recently due to a lot of Southern based BBC employees moving there and houses are not on the market long. Got everything you will need daily, schools, doctors, shops, restaurants, bars etc and there is still a "village" feel about the place.

Maybe worth considering. If you want to know any more then PM me smile

I was raised in Firswood, a suburb between Stretford and Chorlton. The area is 3 miles from city centre and about 20 minutes from the airport. It now has its own Metrolink station.

I will soon need to sell my mum's house. A 3 bedroom semi, detached modern garage and a huge back garden. House prices have gone high in the neighbourhood, but my mum's house needs modernising, so a bit of a blank canvas and will be priced to reflect this. I do not anticipate difficulty in selling, but still got to do a complete house emptying that I am not looking forward to!

I'll throw in Rossendale, a beautiful part of Lancashire, with easy access to Manchester both by car or bus, reasonably priced housing and 40 minutes to Manchester airport. Don't go too far away from Rawtenstall centre though, because you pick up the M66 there.

Money no object, I'd choose Mere or Knutsford.

I was born and raised in Northwich, well just a mile or so outside in Rudheath and then moved to Macclesfield.

Northwich is fine and the surrounding areas, but I wouldn't want to commute into Manchester from there. The trains are woeful, as is pretty much anywhere along the Mid Cheshire line (Knutsford, Plumley, Lostock Gralam) as they are hourly (Northern Rail pacers eugh!) and take an age to get to Piccadilly and it's probably easier to get off at Altrincham and take the Metrolink. Driving from Northwich to Manchester wouldn't be great either. My sister works in Stockport and if there is an accident on the M56, M6 around Knutsford or the M60 it can be a nightmare. She took nearly 3 hours to get home once last year due to a crash on the M60. Although, outside of peak times you can easily get to the airport in 25 mins now the new road is open between the M6 and M56 if everything is running OK. Between Northwich and Macclesfield is about 18 miles and you only pass little hamlets on the way if you do the backroads so there is lovely countryside all around. I used to commute down them between Northwich and Macclesfield, but unfortunately everyone else does now too! Chester/North Wales are very easily accessible too. One downside is the planned HS2 route (if it gets built) is right on the doorstep of the A556 at Rudheath and the traffic is terrible there now as it is due to the expansion of Gadbrook Park and they haven't improved the roads to cope.

Macclesfield again is good, although you'll not be far from a council estate wherever you live there, but again, stunning countryside on the doorstep with the Cheshire Plains and the Peak District. However, it takes an age to get to the motorway network, which is my only gripe compared to Northwich as we have family in North Wales and it's slow going. Again though, I wouldn't fancy commuting by car from Macclesfield to Manchester. The trains are good though, very frequent and the Virgin trains that stop from Euston to Piccadilly only stop again at Stockport before they get to Manchester so it's about 25 mins into the city centre.

Have a look at places along the new airport bypass - A555 as it has made Poynton, Bramhall etc a very short commute to the airport

Another plus for Poynton - lovely place

north manchester vs south manchester is not really a thing. North is a barren wasteland, and also if you are worried about violence and crime in Chorlton then there are plenty of far worse places to avoid up the north too.

Moved to Whitefield last December.junc 17 M60.

25 minutes by tram into victoria.

Really nice place. Lots of restaurants and bars.

We have a dog and the number of parks/open spaces close by is amazing
