Self Service Scrapyards in the North West of England

Self service yards are still alive & kicking. This is my photo of our local yard where they'll even tell you which row / location the cars you are interested in are, with images of the vehicle in stock available online too. (Silverlake nr Southampton)

That's tidy, last one I went in had oil soaked into the ground with puddles of oil everywhere and a car that had just arrived was on the crane, got swung round, hit something and caught fire.Edited by Richard-390a0 on Friday 19th July 10:03
Rather than leaving to burn on the crane it got swung around and set light to the whole yard, guessing where the exploding gas cylinders would land was interesting.

Not sure these exist any more. Killed off by H&S regs and eBay I expect.
They definitely do. They are just not the kind of business's you will find by looking on google with shiny websites etc. You'll need to ring up or drop by. I had a door from a scrappers recently, trudging round in my rigger boots with a bag of sockets, fella helped me go up to the top rack stood on a pallet on a forklift.

In the good old days in the 70's Alf used to pile eight cars on top of one another. It was a bit hairy being on the top one trying to take the gearbox out.......

You must have lived somewhere near me then, I grew up in Burnley.

Alf's yard was something to behold, there wasn't much he didn't have.
'How much is that Cortina gearbox Alf? Oh, it's out so give us a fiver'

Sorry to say, these are few and far between now in England as a whole. All down to health and safety and environmental issues. I still miss being threatened by two Alsatians, before wrecking my shiny work shoes and later the carpets of my car ,by sliding through a quagmire of greasy mud before entering the inevitable Portakabin ( often deserted, but adorned with filthy calendars, only to be acknowledged if lucky by the owner, usually monosyllabic, who grunted ‘ over there, mate’. Later, the yards became a little more sophisticated and some staff members resembled ,or improved upon the girls on the calendars. The liberation of a few extra switches and the odd gauge was no doubt all factored in, as the yard paid so little for the scrap cars; some even revived a few of the marginal MOT failures and sold them on for £100. It’s all ( a bit) posher now, but they never seem to have what you want. And, yes, there are a few left of the old sort, but here you really are entering a grim twilight world which exists in the least salubrious areas of most big towns.
