Brid and Scarborough were grand Victorian towns. Sadly they're now moribund stholes.
Thats a bit unfair, Scarborough has things Brid could only dream of. It gets marnignaly more tourists, so the shops are better. Theres also the small Uni campus which means the night life is slightly better.

However after living there for 5 years, I found the answer to the question is York.

I agree. I spent 3 years at said Uni, and the night life was moderately better.

York was pretty much always the answer.

I'll give you that - Scarborough is MUCH nicer than Brid. Still sadly run down places though.

Lived in Scarborough for 46 years, and it's tired. Brid is a sthole though, whitby is a nightmare, especially with the new parking malarkee.Filey, oh dear. Malton is a fairly nice market town, but a bit more expensive, as is Pickering.
If you see something you like in Scarborough, let me know, and I'll let you know a little about the immediate neighbourhood.:-)

If you like a drive, then there are a few decent runs around the moors. Scarborough,Helmsley,Stokesley,Whitby and back to Scarborough is half decent....although not so much during summer hols.

As others have said, Cinema ( does anyone actually go to cinema these days ? ) Hull 1st choice, York. Shopping, York 1st Choice,Hull. Plenty to see and do within an hour, and the rush hour lasts a bout 15mins laughlaugh

Bridlington in winter-A certain Specials song comes to mind.
Bridlington in summer - Full of "comforts" from Wezzieland and South Yorkshire.
Pubs- Try old town. Some even offer live music on weekends. Other places, 'up your own arse' comes to mind. Planning to move to Hull at end of Summer.

Gave up on the plan to retire to the holiday cottage overlooking the harbour from Henrietta St, along beyond the abbey steps and Fortune's kipper smokehouse.

Great in winter but access blocked by tourists walking up Church St in season and weekends just got too much. And then the parking hollyhocks on top.

Villages inland would be my suggestion. Quite a few already mentioned, how about Thirsk area?

I can't imagine anywhere in Bridlington feeling "up your own arse". Are these the only pubs that insist on you wearing a shirt to get in? Real glass pint pots?

I prefer brid to Scarborough and supply most of the pubs in brid and Scarborough infact I’m currently on my way to brid! I’d personally look at Driffield/Beverley area Filey is alright and Whitby! Cayton Bay Area isn’t too bad either!

York has a lot of charm and isn’t that far away if I’m honest probably an hour from brid if that! If you didn’t fancy York city then again there’s a lot of lovely little areas in between. Malton and Pickering has abit of charm and Pickering is in the middle of Scarborough Whitby and brid I could get to either 3 within 30 mins

+1 for Brid being a little, erm, interesting. It's handy for me as i'm based just west of Driffield if i want to go to the seaside and the town is harmless enough, couldn't live there though.

Sounding like a Driffield meet is required.

Been trying to get a Driving Instructor in Brid who does Automatics.

Learn in a manual would probably be easier

It's for disabled son who can't do manuals, or rather won't due to autism.

Having read all the comments it appears that these comments are a few years old. Having visited Bridlington two days ago to see family I can honestly say that I would truly love to live in Bridlington. In fact that is my plan for next year. If you want to live in the dump then move to Mansfield where I currently live. Bridlington is certainly not a dump. The town was buzzing on Tuesday with families there on holiday. The sea front has been redeveloped and we sat in the sun looking out to sea while enjoying seaside fish and chips. Beautiful.

I grew up in Flamborough and my wife in Brid. I still have a brother in Flamborough and sister in Brid. We moved to Copmanthorpe (York) with work over 30 years ago and go back regularly on family visits. We like a walk on the harbour and seafront in Brid and the cliffs at Flamborough but sadly there's little else to appeal to us generally nowadays. It's a shame, Brid was quite vibrant up to the nineties, I worked at Bridgeport Machines and there was a bit of other 'industry ' there but it's all gone.
To be fair I know some people who've lived there all their lives and would never leave, house prices are reasonable, cheaper than Scarborough which is obviously bigger and livelier. ( and hilly). I'd love a weekend bungalow at Flamborough lighthouse but my wife's having none of it.

Reading my post above I've maybe been a bit hard on Brid. Depending on what someone's expectations are they may be happy to move there. Some people love living on the coast. You'd have to accept there's not a great range of shops but it's only a small town. I like the Old Town pubs. If you like stately home stuff there's Burton Agnes Hall, Sledmere House and Burton Constable not far away. Presumably anyone posting on here will have some motoring interest, not much going on in Brid but I believe Auto 66 Club are restarting racing at Oliver's Mount in Scarborough.
Beverley's a nice town, half an hour from Brid and some good restaurants.

There are some pleasant aspects to Brid as someone has just described, however the place has an underlying drug problem, plus a liberal sprinkling of violence particularly in the summer. Living on the outskirts would be OK, or further afield, but not Brid itself.

I spend a fair amount of time in Brid as 2 of my mates live there, both in the town centre. It's a very friendly place and in many of the pubs you'll leave with new friends you didn't have when you went in just from random conversations you'll have with the staff and punters. All the locals seem to know each other and even I get recognised now and stopped for a hand shake and chat which inevitably leads to going for "a quick pint" that turns into an all-day pub crawl hehe. Beer is surprisingly cheap too.

The place is pretty dead through the week in low season as you'd expect from any seaside town, but at the weekends there's plenty of folks in town and down at the harbour/beach as they've come for a weekend break. High season still sees the place packed with people, especially if the sun's out. The beaches offer long walks in both directions if that's your thing; you can walk nearly up to Flamborough South Landing at one side and right down to Hornsea on the other.

There's a big Morrisons and Tesco both within walking distance of the town centre on Hilderthorpe Rd. I'm told that the doctor's surgery is very oversubscribed in Brid and it's not uncommon to wait 4 weeks for a GP appointment, so something to bear in mind if you have medical issues and are thinking of moving there.

Not much in the way of local work unless you want to work in a bar/cafe/retail or wash/clean caravans and chalets. Mate #1 commutes to Driffield every day to a retail management job and mate #2 has to commute to Wakefield for decent paying work in his role.

Property is cheaper than other parts of Yorkshire but not that cheap when you factor in the lack of the good paying work locally. A 2 bed flat with kitchenette in a converted 3 storey Victorian terrace typically ranges between £350-450 a month without any parking, 3-4 bed terrace house £450-550 and £600+ for anything semi-detached/bungalow.

If you're self-sufficient for income/don't need to leave the house to earn then Brid is a good place to live, particularly if you enjoy going out socialising as everyone is friendly and seem to look-out for each other. It's also very rare to see a non-white face, if that is something that bothers you. The reports of fighting are overblown. Both of my mates are out in the pubs in town most nights of the week and fighting is very rare, usually a result of too many sherberts and quickly defused. You're more likely to have some random person come up to you to shake your hand or give you a hug (in the case of women) than get involved in a fight.

Edit: if you're there for a piss-up a good Sunday typically runs something like this : small English breakfast before 10 in Tea @ 33s on Hilderthorpe Rd next to The Albion, a walk round town with the missus and down along the beach with a stop for a coffee at the Belvedere cafe. Back up to Brid and time for a full Sunday lunch in Tea @ 33s again, or you can order it and they'll deliver for you smile. Walk back into town to The Stirling Castle yikes (with self-adhesive carpets hehe) for the karaoke and a few pints. Next stop over the road in The New Inn for more karaoke and good times. Next stop The Telegraph up in the old town to see old mates and a catch-up. Back down to town to The Dog House, New Inn, Hook & Parrot, Dog House again and usually finish up in The Hilderthorpe.

Jeez. I was born in Hull, moved away in the mid 80s when I was 18 and I recognise everything said on this thread about East Yorkshire.

Has it really remained almost unchanged for a third of a century? And as for a 10 pint pub/karaoke crawl with the Missus, is there really that little culture, that little to do apart from beer, fish & chips, and more beer?

As said earlier in the thread. The answer is York.
