I'm currently papping myself for the next fortnight - saw one of those Hadecs go off on the opposite side of the motorway near Sheffield with no gantry signs lit up. Trouble was this was on the return journey from Doncaster... And I'm quite confident I was sat around 90ish on this downhill section!

I wonder, the fact that it's mostly a dual carriageway rather than 3 or 4 lanes hopefully curtails some of their bothersome ambition.
Ferrybridge to M18 is already planned to made motorway but I don't think the funding has been signed off yet. To be honest that part needs upgrading more urgently than the Leeming to Scotch Corner section.

That whole section from the M62 needs widening as you say to the M18, I've queued on there at 5.30am!

Travelling southbound today, noticed the northbound camera going bananas. Just after Tibshelf services as the road goes downhill.

Must have gone off at least ten times as we approached it, like a strobe light.

Yup, drove to Donnington on Sunday and saw quite a lot of them go off - and I would reiterate that they seem to go off at not a huge amount over 70 too. Go steady and relax from now on.

If I was to don my tin hat I may suggest the tolerance of the camera is linked to recently rejected proposal to reduce that stretch of road to 60mph

The 2 either side of the gantry just north of Woodall MSA are broken. They've been flashing at anything that passes for the past 24hrs+. Could see the flashes from them from as far away as the dip on the other side of junction 30 when I came home a few hours ago!

Talking of this stretch of motorway, where does the 50mph zone finish southbound at the moment? It ends at the M18, or so I thought last night. I went under the gantry you are describing at what must be 70-75mph, and got a flash. The northbound side was definitely set to 50 here though so I can't be sure if it was in fact a car travelling north getting done. Either way, I saw no good reason for it. It was pitch black, do you think the other carriageway's flash is enough to light a car up?

50 limit ends where lane 1 of the M18 properly becomes lane 1 of 4 on the M1.

Are there any cameras on this stretch that would flash and photograph the front of the car, or are they all rear facing?

Currently papping myself too as yesterday I stupidly pressed the loud pedal at the wrong time in frustration at an erraticly driven outside land dawdler and went through one of these HADECS 3 gantrys at over 100 frown

Was the M1 south at Chesterfield I think, the gantry wasn't showing a managed speed.

Got a nervous 14 days coming up frown

If it didn't flash (twice) then you're fine. And you can see the flash easily even in bright sunlight.

It was cloudy and late afternoon so I don't think it flashed, fingers crossed for the next couple of weeks smash

I drive down the M1 j32 to j25 every single day (3 years + and counting) and have the cruise set to 90, I slow to 75 for the 2 HADECS near j26.
I do slow down for the temporary limits of course (too within about +5 over the advised speed)
Not received anything so far.

I too have just driven up the M1 from Leicester M69 junction 21 up to the M18 and then on to Hull. I too noted that during the first part of my journey up the M69 and the first part of the M1 at Leicester, my driving was totally focussed on the activity of cars in front and behind me. Consequently I felt I was driving well and safely.
However all that changed on the M1 as I entered into the smart motorway section. From this point I found that I was spending most of my concentration on my speedo and looking at all the gantries for the new cameras. Consequently I was much less aware of my fellow road user's activities.
After that journey up to Hull in daylight and then back in the dark - when I couldn't see the cameras - I felt totally exhausted.

If other drivers were doing the same as me, then this would surely mean more accidents on this section of the M1 - totally counter-productive.

Can anyone confirm whether the variable, gantry mounted cameras are in operation when there is no variable speed limit signed?

Also can anyone say what the new M1 HADECs cameras are likely to flash you at...75?

It all seems to be revenue generating to me and not safety based at all.

When they were first put up i saw them flash a couple of times when there was no reduced speed limit but haven't done since. I have been told they only work when a reduced speed limit is in effect, i saw them flash numerous times on the M1 (Wakefield) when the speed limit dropped to 40 and about 10-15 cars got flashed meaning everyone behind slammed the anchors on (safe motorway)

The camera's on the M62 also flash when reduced speed limits are on but i did get flashed once at junction 26 when no speed limit was on and i was doing about 80mph but nothing came through

the one by junction 40 went off on me when i was doing 60 in a 70 i rang the police to ask why and they said if a car hasn't passed them in a while they go off like a self check, don't know if thats true, i never got a ticket though, these days its not worth charging around on these smart motorways, i set the adaptive cruise to 65 and let the car follow the car ahead if the limit goes lower the car reacts itself so no need to worry, then save the fast driving for the B roads now
