the one by junction 40 went off on me when i was doing 60 in a 70 i rang the police to ask why and they said if a car hasn't passed them in a while they go off like a self check, don't know if thats true, i never got a ticket though, these days its not worth charging around on these smart motorways, i set the adaptive cruise to 65 and let the car follow the car ahead if the limit goes lower the car reacts itself so no need to worry, then save the fast driving for the B roads now
Well depends if the car picks up on the new limit, I've noticed a few times my speed limit display doesn't show the correct limit, the other night it was saying 60mph whilst I was in a 30 and it didn't change until we entered a 40mph which it picked up.

We still need to drive our cars, you can't just sit there zoned out, thinking your beta version of adaptive cruise will sort everything out.

I too have just driven up the M1 from Leicester M69 junction 21 up to the M18 and then on to Hull. I too noted that during the first part of my journey up the M69 and the first part of the M1 at Leicester, my driving was totally focussed on the activity of cars in front and behind me. Consequently I felt I was driving well and safely.
However all that changed on the M1 as I entered into the smart motorway section. From this point I found that I was spending most of my concentration on my speedo and looking at all the gantries for the new cameras. Consequently I was much less aware of my fellow road user's activities.
After that journey up to Hull in daylight and then back in the dark - when I couldn't see the cameras - I felt totally exhausted.

If other drivers were doing the same as me, then this would surely mean more accidents on this section of the M1 - totally counter-productive.

Can anyone confirm whether the variable, gantry mounted cameras are in operation when there is no variable speed limit signed?

Also can anyone say what the new M1 HADECs cameras are likely to flash you at...75?

It all seems to be revenue generating to me and not safety based at all.

I drive down the M1 j32 to j25 every single day (3 years + and counting) and have the cruise set to 90, I slow to 75 for the 2 HADECS near j26.
I do slow down for the temporary limits of course (too within about +5 over the advised speed)
Not received anything so far.
I drive South from Junction 27 a couple of times a week to Junction 21. I have always done Junction 27-25 (where the gantry and Hadecs3 cameras are) at an indicated 75. I tried the trip at an indicated 80 yesterday - I'll see what happens!

So this happened to me on M1 J40 travelling at just over 100 at night. There was no cars literally a mile in front or behind me. From what i recall, there was just one bright flash that lasted like half a second. Im wondering, to all those that got flashed by a HADEC3 when there was no speed limit displayed, did you recieve anything in the post?
No but I wasn't doing anything near 100+

You can't do 100mph in that section anymore, I would expect a NIP.

The HADECS cameras are all painted yellow and big signs to boot, when speeding you need to pay attention, I know it's frustrating when there is no traffic but...

Id be interested to see the official figures, but my experience from commuting on the 62 past the M1 every morning would suggest you're right. I've never known the M1 to have lanes closed so regularly between jct 39 and 42 - even with 4 lanes its still so bad that it affects the 62!

Interestingly the gantry cameras have disappeared on the M62 between J29 & J30.

Lots have been cleared on both sides. Haldecs still remain though.

So what is the crack with these HADECS cameras then? Are they active 24/7 or only when a gantry LED speed sign is displayed?

If you add your speedo error to the cameras allowance 50 becomes an indicated 58ish and 70 around 80.

Thats all fine until the authorities see this and then clamp down on what you can get away. Then you spoil it for law abiding drivers who may inadvertently go over the speed set limit thus giving them a fine. Your type of driving is causing the very over the top number of cameras spoiling the driving experience for good drivers.

Recently noticed this too, they havent been replaced by Hadecs 3, so no enforcement of the Downgraded (Un)Smart M62 until West of J 29.

I wonder if those 8 gatso's (hadecs2's ?) have been moved somewhere else in the network?

Radar activated when the LED speed sign is displayed.
With the ridiculous 60mph speed being enforced on the M1 j32-28. If you travel this frequently like I do you learn where the HADECS cameras are (5 or 6 in the whole 22 mile section) and slow down to 65 for each and then back to 85-90 cruise.

Hi, this appears to be the most recent thread regarding speed cameras on the M1.

I was travelling to Rotherham from Hemel Hempstead through variables etc without any issue and yes at times over the speed limit at around 9.30pm.

It wasn’t until J30 northbound that I passed a new style message board (at the side of the road and not an overhead gantry) with nothing displayed. There was a double flash shortly afterwards. It could have been me, it could have been the car behind or it could have been on the opposite southbound carriageway?

Does anyone on here have knowledge of cameras around that location?

Either

a) they were testing the cameras
b) you were speeding

Same here sadly. I do York - London and back each week, ACC on at 75mph and don't worry about the cameras. No ticket in 6 years and that only resulted in a speed awareness course
