Sorry, I'll try not to 'whinge' the next time someone damages one my cars, forgot that it's considered part of great morning out
Whilst I am sorry you say your car was damaged I think some sense of scale is needed, I ran the event for 8 years, it's now in it's 9th year, with up to 5000 people coming twice a year, and with your car I can only think of one other which was damaged, leaving aside the self inflicted Mustang damage. I bet if you worked the odds out your car is safer at the Yorkshire Big Breakfast than in a car park day to day.Radebe said:
Last few times we've had a run out there we've not been able to get close with our cars, we had M4's, RS5, Exiges, 996 Turbo, 997 Turbo, GT4, GTR... Setting off at 6am and we still have to dump them out of sight in the overflow car park. Becomes more of a chav-fest year on year.
Yep, not great being ushered into a gravel car park away from others only to then find the main area is completely chavtastic.Edited by Radebe on Wednesday 29th March 09:21
Best AVOIDED.
will probably head up with some GT4 bods. It is a chav fest tbh, but i quite like looking at the full spectrum of metal. Appreciate a 911 or a 675LT..but also like a well modded hot hatch Often wonder what people my age now thought of me in my Astra GTE with its Janspeed exhaust in the early 90s lol

We all did it, I just don't get the "scene" now though, when I "modified" my crappy cars, I did it in a way i thought was improving the handling or sound, but the whole stanced thing I just don't get, I was talking to one of them and they said their car couldn’t go above 50MPH because of how stanced it was. Basically modifying a car to make it drive worse.

To those being put off by some comments I would suggest you go and see for yourself... I have been going for 4 or 5 years now as luckily often coincides with my trips oop north. Yes it gets busy, yes there are all sorts of cars there and some of those you may not like/appreciate but I am sure there will be plenty for all tastes / distastes.... the field is very close by and if you go to paid events at Goodwood you park in field there too :-)

Well I've just told the wife I was going to head down tomorrow, but then I read this thread. Not going to bother now. I can see modded Lupos at McDonalds if I wanted to.
Why am I posting? Well I noticed that two of the organisers are here and this is feedback - not sure what can be done (perhaps virtual/email passes you have to apply for to park in the main area and move the "chavs" out into the overflow?), but if you want to make sure that snobs like me (do you want people there who one day might buy from SCoM?) still make the trip, you might have to have a think.
Hope tomorrow is nice weather for those going.

For the record I am nothing to do with SCOM any more having had a complete career change after a very enjoyable 8 years at Malton, hence I have no axe to grind whatsoever.
You do however make the point rather well about snobbiness, how do you know the lad in the modified corsa or Passat, or the Subaru or whatever won't be in the market for a Porsche at some time in the future?
Segregating the car parks would inevitably cause offence to some, as an example how would you feel if the organisers decided to only allow 911s and above in, thereby excluding your Cayman? See how difficult it would be?

Would have gone to this but Silverstone WEC calls so that gets my vote.
The only acceptable usage of the word stance is:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stance_(martial_ar...
Anyone that lowers their car to a stupid amount that they can't actually drive it anywhere is a c*ck. I suspect they won't want a Porsche etc in 10 years time, so no loss to SCoM.

My 'snob like me' comment was supposed to show I wasn't being too serious about my statements whilst still making the point that ultimately it depends who the guys are trying to attract.
This thread has put me off coming. So to that end, I guess I'm not really the audience for this event.
You are 100% right regarding the exclusion - ultimately I wouldn't care if it was a well attended event and I was in the Cayman area.
My personal experience is that once the modified Corsa/Lupo brigade start dominating thats the end of the event. There used to be a great gathering near me that attracted classics and Americana. I would take my 58 down. Because of the location, you'd get a lot of families who had finished their shopping trip and would walk around and enjoy the cars on show. Then the brigade started to turn up en masse. Less of the 'original' event attendees started to bother and quickly the police shut it down - because of the loud music and stupid behaviour that tend to follow those guys around.
Honestly tho, please nobody take this as an affront to this event - I just wanted to say that I was going to attend and now I'm not as I don't want to be lumped in with the 'chav' crowd that a number of forums comments now associate with this event.

Nothing wrong with suggesting to organisers that they might want to look at how they can better reach out and encourage cars that a certain segment might find more interesting, but refusing to come out in your " can't afford a 911 Turbo" consolation Why am I posting? Porsche because it also attracts things you don't find all that enticing is a bit lame.
Maybe it isn't the sort of event for you....fair enough...don't go. But don't be rude about it. You can be a petrolhead without liking all classes of cars or things that people do with said cars. What those attending tomorrow will have in common is an interest in cars even if the things that generate interest by be varied. Personally, I'm just going because I heard the bacon sandwich is good and Ill take any excuse for a run out in the Lambo.

I
Ha ha. Yeah, I can't afford anything really - I'm even lying about 'currently own'. Just wanted to feel like a man. I'm so sorry - can you forgive me?
As my second post explained, I was not trying to be rude. I was light hearted about it, but (again, as acknowledged in my second post) I was far too subtle about it.
As much as I'm sure you'd like the argument, I really am not trying to cause one. I was merely pointing out that events can get a bad reputation which can reduce their appeal.
As for a 911 turbo, I wouldn't want one so don't have one. I did try and get on the new GT3 allocation, but that's a discussion for a whole other time and place...which will result in my crying like a baby.

If you were being lighthearted I missed it. Actually, I was too a bit with the Porsche comment though I didn't have any reason to think you would assume so. As it happens its a bit of an inside joke at home that anything but a Turbo is a "can't afford a turbo" Porsche. Unless it is a Boxter. Then it is the "gay/closeted mid-life crisis dentist with enough spare cash to get something other than an Audi TT" Porsche... As much as I'm sure you'd like the argument, I really am not trying to cause one. I was merely pointing out that events can get a bad reputation which can reduce their appeal.
Neither of which are true of course, I'm just a bit weird and like making up stories for the kind of people that drive/buy certain cars. The only one of which I take seriously is the undisputed fact that anyone who buys a convertible Evoque has a mental health problem and should undergo mandatory sterilisation to avoid infecting the future gene pool with whatever defect led them to think it was a good idea.
But you're right, I was being a bit arsey....I just got a bit annoyed at the idea that people were deciding not to go because someone on the internet said it was a bit chavvy....as if the presence of a large group of 20-something trainee estate agents can inhibit enjoyment.
Review: I don't know if it was "chavvy". Certainly there were a lot of modified cars that were not to my taste but I didn't see any behaviour that made me worry about my car being parked on the main road in the industrial estate....except the one little kid eating a kitkat who almost touched it with his melty-chocolate fingers! The horror!
Some really nice things... the LP670-4SV probably being my favourite. We got there early and left early-ish and saw a convoy of supercars on A64 presumably heading that way as well.
It was my fault - occasionally I forget that people don't always read a forum post in the same tone of voice that I wrote it.
In truth, I woke up annoyingly early this morning and considered the drive down after all. Then I blinked and it was an hour and a half later, so that didn't happen!
Glad it was ok and that you're not cleaning cadbury's best off your car now. And I know I shouldn't and I feel dirty every time I do...but there's something about the Evoque Cabrio that I like...perhaps I should have the keys to my 'can't afford a turbo' taken away.
