Moving to Yorkshire

Mrs G and my good self have put the house on the market and aim to make the next move one to God's own county.
We have a ton of family spread out throughput the county so our geographic requirements are anywhere that's up to an hour from Leeds.
We're ideally looking for a nice villlage where we can walk to a local pub (and ideally local shops) and be about 10-15 mins from nice restaurants as that's our main vice.
Would be great if it had a supermarket and gym within 20 mins but that's not crucial.
We've heard that Horsforth is lovely but wondered if anyone had some good suggestions for us to investigate.

Have a look around York too. The A roads do get busy, but no worse than the road out to Ilkley / Otley / Harrogate. Horsforth is nice, and convenient for the North Leeds eateries etc, but too close to the student areas and so on. If you work in central Leeds, the train from Skipton only takes 45 minutes, so that might be a possibility.
Just to clarify a few points.
There is no commuting to Leeds - we just want to be within an hour for any major shopping and also a lot of the family are within 30 mins of Leeds so it's a marker to make sure we're not too far from everyone.
Property wise, we would ideally love to find a plot to build our own (we did this with our previous home) but the main requirement is a lovely mature private garden. Ideally a quarter to half an acre.
It's only the two of us so we could get by with two beds but ideally we want three. We're totally open minded in the type of property - barn, cottage, bungalow - as location and garden are key and we can always modify what we buy.
Budget if flexible - we could go up to around £600k ish but ideally want to stay around £500k if possible.

Perhaps look to be near Harrogate rather than Leeds, as that would be within 1 hour of Leeds anyway. That way you could use Harrogate, which I think is a 'well to do' area, as your main Sunday morning brunch/gym/supermarket/eating out/shopping destination and then Leeds only as required along with York. If you are an active person, then may be an idea to base yourself close to the main roads into the Yorkshire Dales/Lakes so easily accessible with minimal traffic .
As said ilkley is a well known area, and ilkley moors are good for a walk (assume its all grown back since the fire).
Suppose it depends on how often you want to see your family though, if you want to see them a lot, then maybe better to circle a map of a perimeter X miles away and stick to that, as bi-weekly hour long drives will be a pain.

Great advice thanks. Harrogate is definitely an area we will consider. Mrs G is from Yorkshire but left over 30 years ago so she's knowledgeable on the big places, not the villages. My parents will move close by once we've settled and they are the ones we want to be close enough to see on a weekly basis. The rest of the family will be more a case of every few months so our location is very flexible.
Cheers to everybody that has posted so far. We're up in Castleford for a party later this month so will spend a few days getting to know some of the areas we know a little more and the others for the first time.

Sounds like Ilkley and the surrounding area would be perfect for you, lots of restaurants, great scenery, sports facilities (lawn tennis/lido/rugby club/golf club, the moors are perfect for walking, lovely river runs through the town, plenty of outside space and great links into Leeds on the train.

Don't judge it based on Castleford.
With a generous budget for Yorkshire, I would say Ilkley would tick your boxes (or surrounding Wharfedale towns - Addingham, Burley in Wharfedale, Menston). Guiseley is not quite as idyllic IMO. Addingham aside, those places also have a useful good rail service into Leeds for shops and restaurants for a change of scene or a better choice of an evening.
Horsforth is on the edge of Leeds itself so more boxed in and less village like. Nice place, but if you don't need to be affixed to the city then I think you might be better elsewhere.
North of the city then Wetherby is a good shout. Some nice villages between Wetherby and Leeds too so worth a drive at least along that route. Shadwell etc all pleasant.

Oh I've been to Castleford a few times as Mrs Gs aunt lives there; I know it's not necessarily representative of what Yorkshire has to offer With a generous budget for Yorkshire, I would say Ilkley would tick your boxes (or surrounding Wharfedale towns - Addingham, Burley in Wharfedale, Menston). IIkley would be a lovely place to move to, the house market is quite strong there in the 400k-600k bracket though for anything with kerb appeal and space.
An old friends house recently sold and went to sealed bids ended up at 650K.

Yes, you definitely pay a premium for the station/ease of commute and for the Ilkley postcode. Not my bag to be fair, my ex is from there and its too cliquey for me. An old friends house recently sold and went to sealed bids ended up at 650K.

Addingham I love and would make a lot more sense if there is no requirement to head into town regularly.

I had to learn all that too as I am from Hampshire. Moved to Yorkshire about 8 years ago after a few years in the Midlands.Thanks for all the other ideas, it looks like we'll have a great selection of places to investigate when we're up there.

As a bit of a change, have a cruise around on Google Earth between the A1 & A19, roughly from Selby area up to Boroughbridge - this gives you York & Leeds fairly easily, Tockwith, Hammerton, Whixley are all very pretty villages with reasonable facilities but you`re not too far from city centres despite being very rural. Not as hilly but still a pleasant landscape. Good luck with it all!
